hi , looking to get into the macro side , but need a bit of advice as to what lens to get .
i like the close up shots of bugs , and the abstract shots of water and oil , so to the lens what would be the recommendation ?

I am also looking at getting into macro peter and what i have been told is to look at the tamron sp90 at around the £300 mark, but what you will have to take into consideration is the working distance 90mm will close work to your subject or the sigma 150mm or tamron 180mm will give you more room for manouvre but comes at the cost of using a tripod more often.

hope this helps

thanks gaz for the reply prices seem to vary a lot , and there have been some good used items on here in the last few weeks , but you have to be quick lol

Peter i use Canon gear but i have used both the Sigma 105 macro and the Canon 100 macro. Both are very good. If you go for the Sigma try and get the EX DG version as it's better than the plain old EX version.

No such thing as a bad macro lens IMO, any of them are more than capable of doing good quality shots. If anything the lighting is more important than the lens.

Basically just remember the longer the focal length then the easier it will be for bugs (further away means less likelyhood of frightening them off).

Tamron 90mm, Tokina 100mm, Sigma 70mm/105mm/150mm.180mm are all excellent lenses. No way of trying Nikons own make but I am sure they will be just as good.

I have the Nikon 105vr, which is an excellent lens, it is a superbly built lens with internal focusing so the lens stays the same size no matter what distance you focus at. I have had excellent results with it.

My Daughter was lent the 105 sigma at a TP meet and she also came back with some excellent results.

thanks for the advice its appreciated, just got to make the decision on which one .

dont forget to think about working distance with the 90mm you are looking at 14cm and with the 180 about 24cm roughly, and if you are using tubes you will probably get better magnification with shorter lens.
