I've got a Sigma 50mm f/2.8 macro lens which would certainly suit your needs. If you wanted to shoot anything that's alive then I'd recommend getting a longer lens though, as you're less likely to scare it off by getting too close.
Any decent macro lens for a Canon 400D, didnt want to start another thread when there is one already on the same subject. Not sure whether a prime macro is best or a zoom macro so any info is much appreciated.
Macro lenses don't zoom, they are fixed focal length.
Some zoom lenses have a macro function that allows closer focussing, but they aren't true macro lenses, more close up.
Actually, I think Nikon made a zoom macro lens in the dark and distant past.
I have a tokina 100mm 2.8. I love this lens it gives superb images and is built like a tank plus its cheaper than the sigma or tamron macros i believe, i got mine second hand 180 quid in mint condition the only down side is the slow focus but this is an issue for all macro lenses simply because they have to focus from around 20cm to infinity.
I would say this lens is one of the best macros on the market for image quality, superb build and reasonable price
