Just wondering if anyone would have any idea if one of the above has the best auto focus or is there little or nothing in it
 
The Canon performs fine for things that aren't too close, once you get up close and personal manual focus is preferred as the DOF can be hair width thin.
 
the AF on macro/micro lens hunts up and down and round and about the nearer you get

AF also needs "contrast" to work as effectively as it can ……. sometimes you don't have this with micro shots, that's why the use of MF is important

most of the time you will have to dial it in manually until it is in approx focus and then the AF will, (most times), kick into play and help ….. the camera will always tell you when it thinks you are in focus - a green indicator on Nikons

id always use manual for close up, just wasn't sure if one was any better for portraits etc
 
If you read the reviews, the Sigma OS is very good, the Tamron is the bargain micro and the Canon, well it's a Canon - depends how much you want to spend
 
A recent review in N-Photo magazine had the Sigma coming out on top and the Siggy is well liked here. I had the older non VC Tamron and if you used the focus limiter it saved it from going the full length of the focal range which was handy. It didn't snap to attention though but it was ok. The results were fabulous for portraiture though but i took it back as i couldn't live without VC.

i think the range limiter is key, as all macro lenses have long travel, a full sweep takes awhile, but average use with little travel will be ok
 
I've got the Sigma. I chose it over either of the Canon 100s and would do so again- similar quality to the L lens but half the price. I've shot in a murky giraffe house at 1/50 f2.8 ISO 1600 the AF struggled a little bit but only occasionally.
All of these are good lenses though and I doubt you'll be unhappy with any of them.
 
:woot:Just bought the sigma for £360 brand new 3 year warranty, i was always going toward the sigma as i prefer the look but at that price a no brainer :banana:

as bythom indicated if you do not want VR, (OS), the Tamron is the cheapest

OK, you've bought a lens now so the AF question is irrelevant, but nobody answered it so I may as well.

Canon USM lenses generally blow away any of the non-OEM lenses as far as AF speed is concerned. Simple as.

Of course there are oddities... such as the Canon 85mm f/1.2 L II USM, which has a huge amount of glass to move and is very slow. And some of the newer non-OEM lenses might do well compared to old Canons. But comparing like with like, it's no contest.
