Hi all, I'm looking for some advice if anyone wishes to help please!
I've been given a canon 5dmk1 and want to purchase a macro lens for it. I'm looking at a sigma 150mm for the extra distance as I want to shoot dragonflies. Has any one got any advice please.

I've sold all my Canon gear but I had a 150mm and loved it.

It's a great lens IMVHO and I don't think you'll be disappointed.

PS. It's not just for macro, use it as a quality long prime too :D

Cheers, why did you sell your canon gear? I normally shoot with a lumix gh3, tha canon is massive compared to the gh3, I was also wondering if I bought a canon adaptor for the lumix if I could use the sigma on that too?
 
I loved my 5D but I just found the body + lens combo too big and too attention grabbing even with just a 50mm f1.4 fitted.

I bought into MFT with a GF1 and then a G1 and I found that I just wasn't using the Canon kit. Eventually I bought a Sony A7 which gives the image quality of the 5D (and better at the higher ISO's) in a body the size of a G1... so once I was sure I could live with the smaller compact system camera setup I sold my 5D and all my lenses and now just use the A7 + manual lenses.

I've kept my G1 + 20mm f1.7, 14-42mm and a lovely Voigtlander 25mm f0.95 that is fantastic although unused (I use the A7) but seems to be unsellable.

I don't know if you can use Canon lenses on your GH3, I suppose you'll lose auto focus and you'll need an adapter with the ability to change the aperture.

PS. I bought an old legacy manual focus Sigma 50mm f2.8 macro to use on my G1 and I've continued to use it on my A7 and it's hard to fault it. As macro is usually manual focus anyway a cheap legacy macro lens is something to think about... I think I paid about £60 or less for the Sigma 50mm.

I put the 85mm 1.8 on the canon, I paid around 150.00 for the lens so I'm going to play around with that for now, then maybe get the macro later.

I recently bought the Sigma EX 105 for my 5D. Ridiculous price cut recently and is now half the price of the Canon L. Seems very solidly built and can't fault it so far. Useful as a fast semi-tele as well as a macro.

You can't go wrong with that lens!

I went for the older, non-OS version (based on reviews), and haven't had any regrets... excellent lens. And rather cheap(ish) these days...
 
I might have a go with the extention tubes first before splashing out on the sigma 150 macro.
Macvisual do you have anymore pics with this set up? The poppy was brilliant!
 
Donnie, from memory that was the standard EF 50mm f/1.8 MkII lens used with the EF12mm MkII ring, a lovely cheap combo that produces excellent results.
I also used a Samyang 35mm f/1.4 very often to with superb photo's connected to the EF 12mm ring.

Hi folks, some great advice and also some extremely beautiful pics, I've just purchased some canon extention tubes to start with from eBay then I think later I will go with the sigma 150, ill post my pics so you can see the results, cheers
