Macro lens?

Hi,

I was thinking about getting a Canon 50mm f2.5 macro lens and a reversing ring but I dont want to spend lots of money and some people are saying I should get a supplementary lens such as a 'Raynox' or closeup filters, like Hoya 2x, 3x, 4x,

what is your thoughts

Why do you want a reversing ring? The lens is a macro anyway so will close focus....

The ring gives you more magnification, but you lose auto focus.

You mean an extension tube then Goes between lens and camera with the lens on the correct way around. A reversing ring is used on manual non macro lenses to achieve greater magnification. You need manual lenses for reversing rings as you need to be able to manually focus AND manually set the aperture. You can't manually set the aperture on any EF/EF-S lens so these are no good for cheap extension tubes (i.e. ones that don't pass the electrical signals through) or reversing rings.

a: you don't need AF when shooting macro
b: there are some very, very good MF macro lenses that cost a fraction of the AF counterparts
c: as long as your lens has an apertur ring, it's possible to use extension tubes and a reverse ring for extreme macro.....have a look here, and see how this guy tweaks and tweaks his set up;
