With Macro lens does it all come down to how far you want to be standing away from the subject?

What are the most common lens? 50 / 60 / 85 / 100 /150

Also are all macro lens 1:1?

Cheers

Andy,

The true definition of a macro lens is one that gives a 1:1 or greater image. Lots of manufacturers put a macro symbol on their zoom lenses but this is really to imply that close focus is possible.

The "closeness" you allude to is usually termed "the working distance" and generally increases with focal length.

I would recommend something around 100/105mm for a good starter lens.

get the Canon 100 f2.8 macro, good distance to the subject and if you want to get closer use the kenko tubes ..

Agree with the above
You need to make sure its a true macro lens that does achieve 1:1
I use the sigma 105 which I've always been really happy with
In tests it rates about the same as the canon, but is much cheaper

You can use extension tubes, and I have, but they are a pain. If you're going to do a lot of macro then invest in a proper lens

Cheers for the help chaps.

What lens give a 1:1 ratio

Thanks(y)

Andy

Sigma 50mm, 70mm, 105mm, 150mm, 180mm
Canon 60mm, 100mm, 180mm
Tamron 90mm

are all true 1:1 macros, there are others as well but these are the most popular.

A lot of zoom lenses now have a macro feature but at best they only deliver a 1:2 ratio and the image quality isn't nearly as good as a dedicated prime lens.
