I, am after a lens which would capture the fine details on a leaf or similar.
Budget of around £50-300
Must be compatible with 550D

Sigma 105mm
Tamron 90mm

Would be the obvious choices.

Not sure where in your budget the canon 100mm falls, but I suspect more than £300.

Maybe a used canon 100mm f/2.8 (not the L IS version).

The sigma and tamron are excellent lenses, but if you can get the old canon model for a similar price it has the advantages of faster AF and non-extending barrel (not that useful for macro but it'll add to it's ability to double as a general purpose mid-telephoto).

If you're not bothered about AF performance though, the tamron or sigma will both be tack sharp.
