I have a Canon 600D and I'm interested in macro .Are the two 100mm macro lens from canon just a different price because one has IS or is there something I'm missing, and would either be suitable for my camera?

Hi Mike.

One (the IS one) is an "L" lens which is Canon's top of the range lens collection. Better quality glass and stuff like that. Which is why that one is more expensive. I believe the cheaper one still produces very good results though. Hopefully someone who has tried both will come along and advise further.

I've got the L version and it is excellent, however I do remember reading that the optics on the non L version are the same, it's just the IS and the sealing that are better. I've taken some fantastic stuff with mine on a 550D, a 60D and a 5D3 so yes it will work very well with your 600D.

Some on the non L lenses are optically just as good as L lenses; the 100mm f2.8 macro and the 100mm f2 being good examples of this.

The L designation is about build quality / materials used just as much as optical quality. The L lenses have metal barrels and feel more robust than the non L lenses.

BTW, the L version of the 100mm f2.8 macro has a different optical construction to the non L version.

The L version has 15 elements in 12 groups, the non L version has 12 element in 8 groups.

Don't forget the Canon 60mm - another excellent lens if you do not need so much reach. I have the 100mm F2.8 and it can be a bit long, on my 1.3 crop, for flower photography (even more so on your 1.6 crop) - but I would prefer a much longer lens for insects. Try a few different ones before you buy and don't forget the 3rd party lenses.

It's also possible to use extension tubes with zoom lenses to get close ups without getting too close:

Don't have a canon but I've just noticed there's a sigma macro lens canon fit in the classifieds :)
