macro lens

hey, this question is properly asked loads so I'm sorry,


i have the nikon d5100, and I'm currently using the tamron 70-300mm lens with macro features, and i wanted to look into getting a new macro lens, i don't mind if it's a zoom lens or a fixed, but need something at least 50mm plus, £1000 budget. i do lots of macros and i am getting reasonably good at them but find my lens is not quite getting the quality i would like out of my photos, what do you suggest getting??

with that budget the 105 vr f/2.8 seems the obvious choice

The 105mm 2.8 VR micro is a fantastic lens. I've used all kinds of lenses over the years, a lot of 2.8 zooms, primes, old manual lenses etc ... and I can safely say this is one of the nicest to handle I've used to date. Just got it a few weeks back and it's barely been off my camera since. Apart from the odd few times I needed something wider.

Buying on amazon.co.uk will leave you with £375 too!

Go for fixed true macro, and with your budget you will easily achieve that. Zooms are not macro, despite what it says on the tin. This is capitalism rearing its ugly head from the manufacturers stamping the word ' Macro ' on a lens that merely gets a bit closer than your average lens. Its almost an epidemic these days. But it sells lenses

Macro, proper macro, starts at 1:1. No zoom ' macro ' does that. The difference is chalk n cheese

For a 1000 quid you could get the Micro-Nikkor 105VR and, if you felt like it, the really-quite-useful Sigma EM-140 macro ring flash (currently £313.99 on Amazon).
