I would like to do some macro shots and currently own a 50mm nifty for my canon 500D.

Now, best options i have read is to either buy a dedicated Macro like a 60mm which would also serve me well as a portrait lens etc or buy some extension tubes?

I do like the idea of the 60mm but not sure if it would be better to get the tubes?

It is so near your focal length of the 50mm, I would suggest something nearer 100mm which means you don't need to be so close to your subject, important for things like butterflies. Also 100mm used to be the standard focal length for portraits back in 35mm days.
