canon 100mm usm
sigma 180mm
sigma 150mm

whats the best quality wise or are they pretty much the same?

regards wes.

It's not on your list, but the Tamron 90mm performs as well as the on-brand macro lenses for half the price. I have one and it's my most used lens by a long margin.

That one jumped to my mind too.

I've used four macro lenses - one older model Tamron 90mm, two newer Tamron 90mm (Sony and Canon fit) and now the Canon 100mm L macro. All of them take very sharp shots. Hard to fault the cheaper Tamrons (and my brother swears by his Sigma 105mm too). The IS on the Canon L lens is handy and it focuses fast enough for portrait work too. But for pure macro I'd say best value would be the older Tamron 90mm if you can find one. Cheaper than newer versions and still excellent lenses.

thats what im thinking, it wouldnt just be used for macros, love the look of the canon L but couldnt stretch to that just yet having never used or seen one in action.

Not being a Canon user but I have always gone for the sigma 150 2.8 (had 3)... I sold one to get the Nikon 60mm afd but soon sold that & purchased the Sigma again... I have had the Sigma 180mm as well but that was absolute massive on a D40 that I had at the time....

In short for me I would recommend the Sigma 150 EX 150mm 2.8 - awesome lens... Well it was on my Nikon's but as to regrads on a Cnaon body I can't comment...

 This post of mine is prob no help to you what so ever... but is just my tuppence really :p

Best bang for your buck would be the tamron 90mm macro..... I have the canon 60mm but would say the tamron would pip this and the canon 100mm for sharpness, taking price in to account to you can't go wrong

I've been very impressed by the sigma 150mm macro, only used it a couple of times as I have to pinch it off the wife but I'm finding macro quite addictive. I can't compare it to the others as I've never used them but can confirm the 150 is very sharp on our Canon gear

Thanks for that, so it seems its just as good on a Canon body as it is on a Nikon....

So yep... Its a  then for the Siggie 150mm 2.8

Sigma 150mm by a very amateur macro togger ;)

you could also try a look on www.pixel-peeper.com... That will give you what body & what lens you wish to see...

what do the tamrons go for, £150??

No around £200- £250 secondhand, but they can be picked up for as little as £320 new if you shop around.

As said they are a hidden gem of a lens, great for portrait and street work as well, well made, light, everything works as it should and they're as sharp as a tack, even great full open unlike the non L canon.

The only downsides are the autofocus isn't as fast or quiet as on the canon USM models

I'd vote for the 150mm as well.

I wrote a short review of it here:

A couple of my shots with it:

I have the 150mm f2.8, I use it a lot for handheld flower shots. A couple of recent ones...
