Yes
Hi all

Ive never shot Macro and currently dont own a macro lens however i was wondering - can a macro lens also be used for other purposes or every day shooting?

cheers

Yes of course. Macro lenses can make great portrait lenses, especially in the 100-180mm range

Yep, agreed - the only thing you'l find is that in general they focus slower as they designed for closer distances, but yep as Tom says they make great portrait primes.

BTW, nice website.

As the chaps have already said, good for portraits. I have a Canon 180mm f3.5 macro, and use it for general use as well as macro... Also have the Canon 100mm 2.8 is... Used in the same way... Both take excellent non macro pictures. However, the specialised MP-E 65mm f2.8 1-5X can only be used for macro...

Good point on the MPE, I have seen it used for regular images, but just don't!

Daughter has a Sigma 50mm F2.8 Macro lens (true 1:1 Macro), which she uses nicely for non macro work, it is slower to focus, but gives great results.

I would decide what you want to shoot Macro wise - 50mm is fine for objects / flowers etc, but if you want to shoot bugs, then you really need 100mm plus...

I have the Sigma 105mm 2.8 and I have used it for portraits and to take pics of my kid from a distance without her noticing as well as using it for macro. It gives great results.

i had the canon 100mm L version, its a fantastically sharp portrait lens

Another vote for the Canon 100mm as a portrait lens. I use it more as portrait than I do for Macro (but thats just because I've not overly done much macro work)
