Macro - not quite what I was expecting...

I got myself an old-skool Sigma 300mm Macro lens (yashica fit) and an adaptor to fit my D40.

I just have one question; having never taken anything "macro" before, I was expecting to hold the lens much closer to the subject. I have to stand a good 4ft away before I can focus in properly. even then i get no more magnification than I do with my NON-Macro 70-300VR.

Am I doing something wrong?

The problem is that the lens you got, certainly is not a dedicated macro. Sometimes they use the "macro" designation for lenses with a magnification of 1:4, which should be about the same as your 70-300mm VR.

ah that sucks! :( the £25 Y/C to Nikon adaptor was a waste of money then :(

however, it also allows me to mount the 35mm and 50mm primes that I have. could I use them with extension tubes?
I don't really understand them. Do you basically reverse the lens and screw the filter thread to the extension tube which is then attached to the camera?

Hey James,

I just bought one of those adaptors too so I could use the 50mm lens from my Yashica film SLR with my D80. Makes a great combination :)

I don't know what tubes you have but with mine the lens goes on the normal way round and the C/Y adaptor means I can use the Yashica 50mm for macro work too. I did some test shots at the weekend and was able to focus with it about 1cm from the target. At f/1.9 the DoF is VERY small :D

I think that may be the answer! The OP does not mention tubes!!

hey guys,

no I don't have any tubes.
I have been playing around thismorning with reverse mounting the 50mm f/1.7.

VERY small DOF is an understatement! to get a useable DOF I need to stop up to about f/5.6 but then I have a problem with trying to get enough light in. :( I've got a decent flashgun, but the camera complains about it being in TTL mode.

Bristolian; how do you get enough light, using the extension tubes as well?
