As I am about to dabble in macro/close up photography, can anyone recommend a decent book for a macro novice.

Digital Macro Photography by Ross Hoddinott isn't too bad.

'Close-ups in Nature' by John Shaw is a classic. A bit out-dated in terms of equipment as it's from the film era but the techniques are still the same.
 
Loads of good reading on the net, just google macro photography tutorials or similar. What kit are you using? I've shot a fair bit of macro over the last couple of years and will help if I can.
Posting a few images in the macro section and getting feedback will help, we're a friendly lot in there;)
