Hi Guys,

I've got 3 options & would like some advice on which way to go & what would be the best bang for my buck.

1: Raynox DCR-250

2: Reverse Macro Ring

3: Extension tubes

I'll be using them on my Tamron 70-300 & Nikon 18-200

Thanks
Rob

Any 3 of those would be a good start to macro photography:

1. More expensive than the other two, I haven't used one of these myself but people seem to be getting some very good results with them in the macro forum here: http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=232617

2. Two different options here; either a lens reversed onto the camera body or a lens reversed on the front of another lens. It's a bit difficult to predict how much magnification you'll get with a lens reversed onto the body, and you will be stuck at the maximum aperture of your lens (unless you set the aperture then hold the DOF preview button while removing the lens). One lens reversed on the front of another is the option I use, as you can still change the aperture of the lens mounted on the body. Magnification is given by the ratio of focal lengths of your 2 lenses, e.g. a 100mm lens on the body and 50mm lens reversed in front will give 100/50 = 2:1 magnification. Some of my photos using this method are on here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/79938104@N04/

3. Some extension tubes have electrical connections to keep aperture control, but most cheap ones don't which means that you'll have to do the DOF preview button trick as above to change it. Otherwise this is also a good option.

Hope all that helps a bit :)

I'm in the same boat as you, just starting out on the macro field. I decided to go with the Tamron 90mm 1:1. It doubles as a very respectable portrait lens. I found it brand new on fleebay for £239.00 from morrisphoto. There are some second hand ones for about £150 or less. I am truly amazed at the results in both macro and portrait. It works very well with my 600d.

I just got a 250 and posting pics with 70-300 Tamron from 60D in the Macro section.
