Macro question

Hi everyone,
I've only got a Nikon d3100 with the kit 18-55mm lens, been doing macro shots and I'm really enjoying doing macro but obviously you can't get very close with this lens, and haven't got much to spend at the moment.
Would it be ok to just get an extension tube to go with this lens? And perhaps a macro ring light?
I've seen a few cheap extension tubes on amazon but I need advice before buying anything as I'm still learning.

the cheap extension tubes will not connect the electrics so the aperture will stay at its widest
this works on canon
however , you can set the aperture you want with the lens on hold the dof preview button (not sure if you have that) take the lens off and then put the lens on the extension tubes and then on the camera - the aperture should be fixed - BUT if you use a small aperture will be a dark view finder

D3100 doesnt have a DOF button. You might be better off with a raynox adapter.

Would the raynox just fit onto the kit lens? How much do they cost?

Cost about £40. They clip onto the front of the lens. they work better with longer focal lengths, but if you only have the one lens, then you'll have to make do.

Thanks Tom, is there a lowish priced longer focal lens you'd recommend for my nikon?

If budget is a problem perhaps something like this is what you'd be able to practice on - until you get a bit more dosh...?

Otherwise, just save up - the sigma 105, tamron 90mm, sigma 150 or nikon 105 are all brilliant lenses, but you'll be looking around the 400ukp (even used).

might be worth a trip to any local used camera/lenses shops, see what they have..?
