Macro using prime lens

Hi guys,

I have a nikon 50mm 1.8 prime lens and i'm thinking of using it for macro photography. i'm on a tight budget so a dedicated macro lens has been ruled out. the 50mm lens by itself cant go close enough so im considering methods which will allow me to:

1) Macro tubes- i assume will not allow my lens to autofocus on my d90
2) Reversing ring- exposes my prime lens to "the elements"
3) diopter lenses- how good is the actual quality?

What are your opinions on the matter? are there any other methods? thanks.

Re your question 2, you can get filter rings for reversed lenses or you can saw off the end of a rear lens cap.

If you go for higher magnification don't forget to cost in a macro rail.
 
Go for a set of tubes - no loss of IQ and you will get 1:1 with 50mm of tubes. If you go tubes get a set of auto tubes so that you retain aperture control from the body, you will want to manual focus by moving the camera forwards / backwards as changing the focus with the lens will alter the magnification.
 
Tubes. This was done with a full set on a 50mm before I bought a dedicated macro lens.

macro tubes are the way to go and there no loss of image quality
 
Thank you for all your replies. the pictures you guys have posted are really making me impatient to get the gear.

I've read somehwere that the tube affects the dof slightly? no?
