Hi,
I would like to start shooting macro. With my current lenses I'm limited and I'm unable to do close ups as I would love to.

Please tell me from your experience which lens would you recommend?

New ones are expensive and I also looking on alternative way to shoot makro? Cheaper I mean to use my current kit ?

I have 50 mm and 35 mm along with kit lenses 24-55 and 55-200.

Let me know.

Auto extension tubes and your 50mm.

£40 off ebay and will get a 1:1 magnification with no compromise on image quality since there is no additional optics in tubes :)

Yes extention tubes are a great way to get into macro
Make sure that you get ones with electrical contacts so that the auto focus ect still works with them on

Objects.. stuff and thing-me-bobs? - extension tubes should be ok for this. I'm guessing coins and jewellery type "stuff".

Nature.. elephants toenails, venomous spiders, butterflies and mounted specimens.. it depends how close you can get to the subject, using a 50mm and extension tubes you'll be very close and good fieldcraft will be needed to avoid spooking some critters.

The good news is you haven't indicated any truly awkward subjects - I'm also active on a fishkeeping/reefing forum and macro of this type of subject can be more awkward as the physical layout can make the working distance very specific. Autofocus is over-rated for macro, but having aperture control is very useful.
 
We have a Sigma 50mm Macro lens which is great, not too expensive and gives us great results. Should be fine for some of your Macro photography - objects and the like, for nature, you could probably do with a longer lens though - if you are looking at insects for example ...

Another, cheaper alternative is achromats. I use them to photograph mainly invertebrtates and flowers etc on bridge (FZ200), micro-four thirds (G3, with 45-175 lens) and APS-C (70D with 55-250 STM). People are often surprised (and sometimes very surprised indeed) at the quality you can get from achromats on relatively inexpensive dSLR/MFT zoom lenses and fixed lens bridge cameras. I was very surprised when I recently bought a Canon 100L macro, MPE-65 and MT24EX flash along with the 70D hoping I would be able to achieve a radical improvement in image quality, only to send the lenses and flash back, having discovered that in practice any image quality improvements I might get (about the extent of which there was significant doubt) would come at the cost of slower and less flexible modes of working. (An ongoing adventure/exploration that I'm documenting in this thread.)

I use a Canon 500D (close up lens, not camera, around £85), Raynox 150 (around £40), Raynox 250 (around £40), Raynox 150 and 250 stacked, and Raynox MSN-202 (around £55). Between them these provide, on the FZ200, G3 and 70D, the same range of magnifications (down to scene width 4.5mm) as provided by the 100L (around £750) and MPE-65 (around £850).

I would like to start with something steady...just for practice...but trully would love to enter small specimens world. But I know I need longer lens for that to not be to close.. could be cheaper to camuflage myself :-)

You will be about an inch and a half away from your subjects and your VF will be dark so shooting in daylight is your best best. Failing that, a tourch lit subject help with your focusing if they are not moving :)

Hope that gives you a good idea of what's possible, extension tubes can be useful with many lenses (pop one on a wide angle for some serious perspective!) so just useful to have in your bag really.
 
the nice thing about a proper macro lens is you get 1.1 magnification closeup to infinity focus without doing anything, and a focus scale, probably abit better light transmission too.

acromats are universal and not as much hassle as extension tubes, and also worth noting a teleconverter shouldn't effect focus distance, but will give you greater magnification, and non macro utility

This means that when using a macro lens at 1:1, if the camera is set to f/8 the effective aperture is f/16, which means that only one quarter as much light is getting to the sensor (and the viewfinder). At higher magnifications the effect is larger, so at 2:1, f/8 becomes f/24 (only about 1/8th of the amount of light getting to the sensor and viewfinder), and at 5:1, f/8 becomes f/48 (less than 1/16th of the amount of light getting to the sensor and viewfinder). This is why the viewfinder gets darker as magnification increases, and you also need correspondingly longer exposures or more power flash illumination (16 times more at 3:1 for example). The lower light level getting into the camera can also mean that autofocus won't work any more.

In contrast achromats don't lose light; f/8 remains f/8 etc. You can see what you are doing through the viewfinder and the exposure works as normal, and so does autofocus. As an example, this is a springtail that I photographed yesterday using an achromat on a Panasonic FZ200 bridge camera, using autofocus (and live view as it happens, but the viewfinder would have worked fine). It is about 2mm long.



Here is the same type and size of springtail also photographed using autofocus (and live view), this time with an achromat on a Canon 70D dSLR.

It is true that the VF gets darker when extension tubes are used. It is also true that the VF gets darker as magnification increases, irrespective of whether extension tubes are used or not, for example when using an MPE-65 out beyond 1:1. And in contrast to this, if achromats are used the VF doesn't get darker as magnification increases (and you don't need longer exposures or more illumination).

I like your pictures a lot! Can't wait to shoot my own. The other sunny day I had plenty ladybirds in my garden. I love this little species a lot. I took some pictures but non of them were as close up as yours.

Ok, guys now is a question from confused woman. To many choices :-P My head is spinning now :-P

What is the difference between Auto extension tubes and Achromats?

Do you know advantages and disadvantages? Which method easier to use? Or just simply, please tell me why did you choose either extension tube or achromats?

I can only tell you about achromats as I have never used extension tubes. You can get terrific results with either, so I'm not suggesting that achromats are better; they are just what I happen to use.

As you found Phil's examples helpful to show what can be done with extension tubes, I'll do the same for achromats.

You can tackle a wide range of subject sizes with achromats (although you'll need more than one to do this). I have four which cover everything down to scenes 4.5mm across. I showed some rather small subjects above. The ones here are all a lot bigger.

First a couple of flowers: a small trefoil in the lawn; and I don't remember what the plant with the droplets is.





And some insects









Achromats are fairly easy to put on and off the camera, and as they go on the end of the camera lens you don't have to expose the sensor to dust, pollen or whatever every time you change them.

As discussed above, you don't lose light with achromats so the viewfinder doesn't go dark if you use high magnifications.

If you like to use autofocus (I almost always do, but most people prefer manual focus for closeups/macros), you can still use autofocus with achromats. Autoexposure works fine too, as does TTL flash.

Achromats vary in cost. Depending on which ones you get and how many you might end up paying as much or more as for a good set of extension tubes, and quite possibly somewhat more than for less expensive extension tubes.

Achromats work best with longer zoom lenses, for dSLRs something like a 55-200 or 55-250. They also work fine on other sorts of cameras. I have used them on several bridge cameras and a micro four thirds camera.

You have to get to a certain distance from the subject with achromats. If the achromat is not very powerful, like the one I often use for flowers, it isn't too important what the exact distance is. As you use more powerful achromats getting the distance right gets more important and makes the achromat more difficult to use. The distance between the subject and the front of the add-on lens would have been about 6 inches for most of these examples. For the very small subjects I posted earlier the distance would have been much smaller, either around 30mm or 50mm depending on which of my achromats I used.

If you're going down a lens route, then you'll probably need a 100mm or longer, unfortunately, this then states to get more expensive...

As you can see from some of the excellent photos posted on here, it opens up a whole new world...

35mm, 50mm, 24-55, 55-200. you mentioned that the best is to use achromats on 55-200?

I have a the dedicated Tamron 90mm VC 1:1 and love it not only good for Macro but portrait too.

I also have extension tubes which take it beyond 1:1 and I'm really happy with results. But I also have a 50mm 1.8 and have yet to try that with extension tubes but looking at @Phil Young results will give it a go, just more strings to my bow.

Which ever method you choose the learning curve is there and it will take time to develop a method that works for you.

No.

But it takes a bit of explaining. Please bear with me.

There are things called close-up filters. They typically come in sets of four lenses, designated +1, +2, +4 and +10. The bigger the number (known as the "diopters" of the lens) the more magnification it provides. You screw these on to the front of the camera lens, just like a filter. They let you focus closer to the subject than normal, so you see less of the subject/scene, giving you magnification. You can "stack" them screwing two or three of them together on the front of the camera lens, giving you even more magnification. They are usually very cheap, perhaps £20 or so for a set of 4.

So far so good. But the downside is that each of the lenses is made of a single piece of glass and will suffer from chromatic aberration, degrading image quality (see 3 - Chromatic aberration on this page - you might also want to look at this page for some other introductory information about close-ups/macros). If you use two or more close-up filters at the same time the image degradation is worse. Some people are very happy with close-up filters, but other people say they give unacceptable results. I don't know, I've never used them, and it's a personal judgement anyway as to how good is good enough. However, if you aren't really sure if you will enjoy doing close-ups, then they are a very inexpensive way to dip your toes in the water, just to get the idea of what it's like being able to photograph small things.

Achromats are very similar to close-up filters, but they are made of two or more pieces of glass which act together to reduce chromatic aberration. You generally don't use more than one achromat at the same time; if you want more power you use a more powerful achromat. I have four achromats:

Canon 500D (not to be confused with the camera with the same name). This is a mild, +2 diopter achromat. It is one of the more expensive ones, around £85. I typically use this for flowers when I want to get a bit closer up than I can by just using the camera with no achromat attached, and for some larger invertebrates like dragonflies, small butterflies, large slugs or crane flies. I can use a working distance (between the subject and the front of the achromat) of between about 300mm to 500mm (this varies a bit between cameras/lenses, but not a lot, so the numbers I'm quoting here for my kit should be a fairly good guide). The 500D is very easy to use, because there is plenty of distance between you and the subject, and you don't have to be very precise about how far you are away from the subject.

Raynox 150. This is a stronger, +4.8 diopter achromat, costing about £40. I typically use this for things the size of wasps, large flies, snails and beetles. My working distance has to be between about 160mm to 210mm. It is fairly easy to use.

Raynox 250. This is an even stronger, +8 diopter achromat, costing about £40. It is very popular with people who want to get really close up to their subjects, getting a good close look at a spider's mouthparts or whatever. I typically use the 250 when invertebrates are too small for the 150. My working distance has to be between about 100mm to 120mm. Some people find it quite hard to use. I know I did when I started out - I almost gave up after a couple of days of not being able to get anything into focus. Other people pick it up and use it straight away with no problem.

Raynox MSN-202. This is a rather specialised piece of equipment, +25 diopters, costing about £55. It is not widely used. I use it for very small subjects such as the springtails I posted images of above, or other very small subjects such as fruit flies. My working distance has to be around 28mm to 31mm. It is extremely difficult to use. I have found that on a camera lens that extends, which most zoom lenses do, it is almost impossible to use out of doors, which is where I do my photography - it would be ok in a studio setting. I would not recommend anyone to try anything this powerful before mastering lower magnification close-ups/macros.

The only time I stack achromats is when I use the Raynox 150 and 250 together. This gives me magnification and working distance between that of the 250 and the 202, and is easier to use than the 202, although still rather difficult to use.


2. From your experience: what do I need to look at while choosing achromats?

It depends on money to some extent. A close-up filter set would be the cheapest way to start out. This would give you access to a wide range of magnifications to try out, as long as you accepted that image quality would not be stellar. And if you found out you did like doing close-ups/macros, then you would have to write off the cost of the close-up filter set when you bought something better.

The gentlest, but most expensive, way into this area would be to start with something like the Canon 500D, which is easiest to use, and then as you gain confidence work your way up to more powerful, but more difficult to use, achromats. Otherwise, and depending on what you would like to start off photographing, something like the Raynox 150 could be a good starting point.

There are alternatives to the lenses I have mentioned. For example, the Canon 250D is +4 diopters, the Marumi 330 is +3 diopters and the Marumi 200 is +5 diopters. These lenses are more expensive than the Raynox 150 and 250, but they have an advantage. The Raynox 150 and 250 have quite small diameters and can cause serious vignetting at lower focal lengths. On my 24x zoom bridge camera for example I have to get out to about 4x zoom or 7x zoom (depending on how I have it set up) before the vignetting goes away. On the other hand, on my 55-250 on my 70D I don't get any vignetting. I do have a Marumi 200, which I wanted to use instead of the Raynox 150, in order to get rid of the vignetting, but unfortunately my tests indicated that it was not as sharp as the Raynox 150. Here too, other people are very happy with their Marumi lenses.

You might want to do a comparison - buy a close-up filter set and an inexpensive set of extension tubes, and then compare the two approaches in practice and see which you feel more at home with. I generally find I have to try things before I'm really sure what works for me and what doesn't. It is a very personal thing as to what we variously feel comfortable with. This approach would also give you some practical experience to lean on, and to use as the basis for more probing questions from people who are into this sort of thing, before deciding which approach to commit more money on, one other approach of course being to use a prime macro lens.

You generally use achromats (and close-up filters) on zoom lenses. This is because they work differently from macro lenses. With a macro lens if you want to change the magnification you move towards or away from the subject. With an achromat you stay the same distance from the subject (well, you keep the working distance the same) and you zoom in and out to alter the magnification.

I have found longer zoom lenses better, as they avoid the vignetting issue, but I have used achromats on shorter zooms similar to your 24-55, but I couldn't use much of the zoom range because of the vignetting I got over most of the zoom range. But I have read of other people having different, and more successful, experiences with short focal length zoom lenses.

I thought until recently that achromats would work on any zoom lens. However, when I recently bought my 70D I also bought a 55-250. Autofocus was iffy with the 500D and 150, and wouldn't work at all with the more powerful 250 and 202. I upgraded to a more expensive 55-250 (Canon's STM version, which is especially good for video apparently) and that works a treat with all my achromats, including autofocus. I've never heard of anyone else having a problem like this, so perhaps my first 55-250 was defective, but I thought I ought to warn you all the same. (And most people don't use autofocus for close-ups/macros anyway, although I find it indispensible.)

go for a dedicated Macro lens like the new Sigma 105mm f2.8 others pale in comparison in my experience

+_you can add extension tubes to the dedicated lens for even closer shooting as and when required, save up it worth the wait

@Lez325 I could argue with you on that one. I used sigma and didnt get on with it. I know you get amazing results from yours and it certainly the cheapest macro lens of the set. However I much prefer the Tamron but that obviously subjective to my style of shooting as is your sigma :D:p
 
A close-up filter set would be the cheapest way to start out. This would give you access to a wide range of magnifications to try out, as long as you accepted that image quality would not be stellar.

I was curious to find out more about close-up filters so I bought a set. It turns out to be very easy to demonstrate their shortcomings. This is the second scene I captured using the +2 diopter filter from the set (the first one suffered from the same problems but not so very visibly as this one). These are not crops by the way, so we don't have to pixel peep to see the problem.



The blue lines around the edges of the petals are chromatic aberration, as are the red and blue lines around the edge of the hole in the petal. Here is the same scene captured with the Canon 500D close-up lens, which is also +2 diopters.



The close-up filter version was also not as sharp and detailed as the Raynox version in both of the test scenes.
 
90mm Tamron (I've not owned or used this)
105mm sigma, or the 150mm sigma (I've not owned or used these - but I wanted the 150 for more working distance)

Extensions tubes are a mmust, but depends on the lens you are using. A tenner ukp will give you tubes, but the lens will need manual aperture and focus - handily the 105mm nikkor does this.
On my d300 this worked well, however on a colleagues camera (d300s) it refused to work properly.

For lenses, see if there is a local used lens/camera shop and try as many as possible. Weights, distances, easy to use, enough lighting (can do instore with a coin, use the same lighting and settings as close to each other as possible. Review at home on the computer.

The Magnification filter is ok to start with. But quality usually hinders very quick. My first with with the Minolta 5D, a 24mm lens (manual from ebay) and the filters. Got some nice crisp results, but working distance is very close.

There are the Raynox adapters which I haven't used, but see to be quite brilliant for the price. Although they appear to work better on longer lenses.

Finally there are two more, there is the reversing filter. This allows you to put one lens reversed onto another, manual controls help a lot, working distance is very very small and it gives (in my tests) the same view as the extension tubes, but a lot closer on working distance. Admittedly I only had the 105 and the 50mm with the same thread size to use. The other is bellows. Bit like the extansion tubes, but like an accordian, you can expand as required, to magnify. Not used and I'm not sure of the price or how easy it is.


If you are on canon, there is the mpe 65. Hard to master, but wow on the zoom. I think the people I've seen using it needed a tripod as shaking is a lot more visible, and also some macro lighting around the lens (it is a bit fat).

The macro world is brilliant, so dip a toe then jump in :)

To fill the frame with a ladybird you'll really need 1:1 magnification - because the ladybird would near-enough fill the frame if it was directly sat on the sensor. But the Sigma might get close enough, if you're prepared to crop.

(I'd save up for the Sigma 105mm, if I was you - and in the mean time invest in a cheap set of extension tubes for your 50mm)

To fill the frame with a ladybird you'll really need 1:1 magnification - because the ladybird would near-enough fill the frame if it was directly sat on the sensor. But the Sigma might get close enough, if you're prepared to crop.

(I'd save up for the Sigma 105mm, if I was you - and in the mean time invest in a cheap set of extension tubes for your 50mm)
Ladybirds require *at least* 1:1 since they'll fill half the frame.

2:1 would be better.

As stated, 1:2 is close, but it's flower close, not insect close.
