Hi guys, I'm trying out macro on my newly aquired Nikon D80.

The lens is a 18-135, have selected "macro" on the selector dial, resulting photos were not focused sharply.

Any tips please?, complete novice here:thinking:

Just because you have selected macro on the dial it does not mean you will get macro shots, your lens still only focuses to its minimum focus distance, to get a true macro lens, or get a raynox or a set of extension tubes. You will also need better lighting as the pop up flash will not light the subject properly because of how close it is to the front of the lens.

is this a 1:1 macro or a 1:2 macro?

were you using manual focus or automatic?

I would suggest using manual focus, get the desired range you need e.g. 50mm, twist the focus ring until in focus and to get it pin sharp gently move the camera forwards and backwards and snap when you feel its best in focus.

it can take a while to get used to doing it like this but I find its the best way for macro

Dave, where abouts are you? If you are close to me or near where I work I can meet up with you so you can try a couple of the options.

Hello Dave, I'm in Chelmsford, Essex.
This D80 is impressive but there's so much to learn.

Small world Dave, so am I, if you want to pop round and try out my raynox/get a few pointers just PM me

Macro is an ability of the lens, not the camera.

By putting the camera in macro all you're doing is putting it on centre point focus and probably upping the saturation, i.e. it sets the camera for the settings you might want for macro.

Just like when you put the camera on portrait it will select the lowest f number and when you put it on 'sport' it will select the highest possible shutter speed.
