Macro/Zoom Lens question

For Macro, I've seen that the Nikon 105vr is one thats highly recommended.
Whats the difference between this lens and setting a telephoto (say a 24-120) to 105 and attempting macro shots?
Apologies if this is a really dumb thing to ask

Minimum focus distance on a macro lens is much lower hence you can get bigger images of things as you can get close to them.
