Afternoon all, im hoping this is in the right section.

Im interested in seeing some 'people' shots you have taken with a macro lens. Specifically, a macro lens on a camera with an APS-C sized sensor. Not so bothered about the H+S shots, but maybe showing some of the persons surroundings. Im considering adding a macro lens to my kit bag, and ive searched for examples on Flickr groups etc, but there are too many people on there using macro lenses for...well...macro type shots :rolleyes:

Does 'macro' matter?

For people shots you don't need 1:1 or even close focus and a shot taken with a macro lens will look pretty much the same as one taken with a non macro lens.

Given a choice between a macro lens and a non macro lens for people shots I personally would forget the macro designation and just compare the two lenses and one thing against macro lenses for non macro shooting is that sometimes their focus system isn't as fast as that of some non macro lenses.
 
Looking for a dual purpose lens really. I want to use the macro facility for macro, but also wanted to see how a good a general lens it wuld make also.
 
I've used my 100mm 2.8 macro for a few portraits... it's a lovely portrait lens... and I'd use it more often, except that I don't have the room in my lounge and really can only use it for outdoor portraits where I can better position myself. I'll see what I can dig up later for you.

Thanks Bethy. Yes, its outdoor portraits that I have in mind for it, so anythng you have would be appreciated.

Hi Nick, It may not be quite what your looking for but I still use a 55mm F2.8 Micro Nikkor AIS lens on my D800 for general use as well as macro. They focus to half life size when using full frame and to life size with a PK13 extension tube.

At one time I used to use it on a D200 (APS-C) camera with optically superb results even wide open. I'm sure you know this will give you effectively about an 83mm F2.8 lens on an APS-C camera which is ideal for portraits.

They are of course manual focus which may not appeal to you but if you are doing close up work you would probably be using manual focus anyway. There is an auto focus version of the lens available and both can be had for a very reasonable price if you look around. Optically you'd be hard pushed to get anything better.

I am sure that nikons 105 Macro gets a very good write up as a portrait lens - not a bad focal length for it either The 55mm mentioned above wouldnt be my first choice for a portrait focal length.

I used my Sigma 150mm for people shots but on APS-C at that sort of length unless you are going for a head/shoulders shot you're going to have to be a short bus ride from your subject especially if you want a full body shot with context.

Hi, im not looking at a 150mm macro, and the shots id use this for would be all outside.

Once again, I really do appreciate that people are taking time to comment on this thread, but im really not looking for lens advice. Im looking for example shots.

Maybe be a bit more specific, portrait shots showing some surroundings is quite vague - what focal length(s) would be a good place to start. Unless I've missed it, it would probably help if you say which lens it is you've decided upon...

tamron 60mm is nice, sony do a 30mm macro, 50mm macro, nikon does a 40mm and a 60mm i think

50mm on crop is a bleh length, 30mm is decent, and 60mm is 90mm equivilent, which is rather nice :)

Apologies, didnt think it was that vague to be honest. Outside of the normal H+S shots, so pretty much ANY macro lens (at varying distances from subject of course).

For outdoor portraits, I quite like the 85mm to 90mm to 135mm range. So, as I said, im 'pretty much' decided, but was looking for examples to help the decision. I have narrowed my choices to 3 lenses. Nikon 60mm, to give me that 90mm equivalent, or the Tamron 90mm or Nikon 85mm to give the approx 130mm equivalent.

Do you have any example shots?

I recently replaced my Nikon 60 with a tamron 90, mainly for the VC and the reach, but that was on FF. I'll dig out some pics from both later and post them up.

Hi

Not used mine for anything like above, but have taken a few snaps of the kids playing with my sigma 105 macro and very impressed, I would go as far as saying it's my new "kit lens" it hasn't come off my body yet.

I asked and looked for the same before I got the sigma, couldn't really find any results for general use, so just jumped in, certainly not regretting it
