OK, so I've been trying to get a friend remote access to the CCTV feed in his shop. Struggling isn't the word for it; it was just ridiculous. I've only had access about 10% of the time despite setting up a DynDNS account for him. The router was a problem at first (Netgear) so swapped it for a Belkin with DMZ functionality and that part of it works fine now (firewall rules wouldn't let the connection through on the Netgear).

After much faffing around I put the Ping & DNS app on my phone and have been using Ping and DNS hourly since yesterday to his domain name - turns out the router is getting a new IP address roughly every 45 minutes (Orange Broadband) WTF....

Mine stays the same for days or weeks unless I restart the router - there's no computer in the shop so the DDNS is set on the router; I honestly don't think the DDNS can keep up to the IP changes, as when the DNS result comes back as failed using the phone app you obviously can't ping the router, so you don't know what IP address it's using - mental or what?

Has anyone ever seen this before with a dynamic IP? Does the DDNS update at a set interval or is supposed to work as soon as an IP address change is made? I'm guessing it doesn't have to propagate out over the Internet or anything like that, but it just seems like it's not coping.... :bang:

Oh, and Orange can't supply a static IP address; wonderful. So if any knows of a decent ISP who can supply one on a BT line please feel free to let me know..... even one that will retain the same dynamic IP for days or even weeks would do.

Silly q but have checked the dns lease time on the router? 45 mins is crazy and doesn't sound right

Am sure I checked that on the Belkin already but can't get remote access to the router at the moment as can't find the IP address..... must have changed again. lol

EDIT: Just managed to get into it again but the lease time is only for the DHCP clients on the LAN, not for the WAN IP from the ISP - I guess there's no point in saying it's dynamic if you can set the lease time yourself..... :)

If it is set that short then that would suggest severe shortage of IP addresses on orange broadband! He should contact orange and complain about dropped connections every 45 minutes. They might extend the lease time...

Yeah, I've told him to get onto them and tell them not acceptable..... which it's not!

....and to add insult to injury the max down/up speed I've seen over the last week is 450KB/s down and 45KB/s up..... and no more than 0.5 miles from the exchange.... :shrug:

I recently had an issue with connection speed at home, after talking to the ISP the stupidest thing resolved it.

By removing the front plate of the telephone jack on the wall and re-seating it I tripled my web speed (up & down), don't ask me to explain how :)
 
nice.. ive had the same IP from sky for the last month or two..

remember while distance from the exchange can effect speed, so can the quality of cable between the exchange and the router...

You could check out these folks. My IP addy hasn't changed in five years.
They do IPv6 as standard, but you can get a free IPv4 8(or bigger) block if that's what you need.

I'll have a look, cheers - can't even ping their IP most of the time so am fighting a battle I can't win until things change....

EDIT: Had a look but their rates are daytime usage based - I've seen up to a dozen people sitting in the shop using their laptops so can't see it being cost effective for him. No idea how much he uses, but it won't be a small amount....

Whilst they are without doubt the best ISP in the UK, many people balk at paying for what they use and want so called "unlimited".

I've had the same /28 (block of 16 routeable IPv4 addresses - I am allergic to NAT) for eight years, even came with me on a house move, despite going from a BT 20CN connection at the old place to an unbundled one over Be at the new.
