After buying yet another photo magazine, i have decided to buy no more. roughly a fiver everytime. 4 or 5 a month and each usually repeats what the others are doing or have done in the previous month.

think money is better going to yet more kit!:D

Discuss! if you wish.

:agree:

I don't buy any of the photo mags, they just get too repetitive for my liking, especially when all of the content is available online. Will sometimes flick through them in the shop though.

Theyre good for reading while I'm taking a ride on the porcelain bus, but that's it IMO.
The actual content I've read too many times over and over again. I just flick through and look at the pretty pictures for inspiration now :)

I still buy Black + White Photography, but the rest mainly I gave up on years ago. If there was ever a case for repetitive stress disorder, the many photography publications would be the main reason.

I sometimes buy one, not very often now TBH.

Since doing the HEFC I found that, well, they weren't often telling me anything more than what I do/can find out here. I didn't do too bad in the HEFC (didn't do great either, just got a merit) but I'd rather come here and find out things than a magazine - I also found that alot of the articles were reverse block, so that meant that I had to get DH to read them to me which I find hard to deal with. (I can't read reverse block writing.)

I sign up when they have the 3 issues for a quid offers.

Thought if I found one I liked would carry on getting the sub, hasn't happened yet though.
Good way to try them out without bunging out a fiver each time, latest one is Digital SLR and must say not too impressed after the first copy

Just have to make sure to cancel the DD before they take the next payment

I took out a sub for a few because there were significant savings.
AP had a good saving plus I got a free camera bag (good quality).

I'll renew my sub with AP, but none of the others.

I inherit a copy of AP every week from my father-in-law and like MArcel that keeps me occupied while I see a few chums off to the sea. Other than that, I travel a fair bit with work so will pick up a copy in a station if I can't be bothered gettting the laptop out. I also pick up copies if they have a decent (as in well written) review of a camera I'm interested in.

AP and WDC are both worth a read, I did have a sub for DSR Photography as they have the best readers' portfolios, but I didn;t renew because I thought after a good launch it lost momentum in its third year. The other monthlies are targetted at beginners IMVHO and not worth bothering with due to the repetition mentioned above but also the restrcited view on how to shoot and what constitutes a good photograph - I'm usually underwhelmed by the competition winners and porfolios they print.

I have thought about a sub to the BJP, particularly as they have a lot of online content of subscribers, but I've never got around to it.

I came to the same conclusion as the OP, although that was in the 1970s :)

I just scan through a few in the shop nowadays and might buy one about once a year or two.

A fiver a month is £60 over a year. Would you really pay someone a lump sum of £60 for 12 magazines ?

Far too much information, I've got a mental image now:eek:

as a relative newbie I have recently subscribed to DSLR magazine............ and have bought odd ones of others....

was worried about repetition..... as experienced that in golf mags a while back.......... I guess it's the same with mags from all interests / hobbies etc........

I don't bother any more. I would rather spend my money on books from the Oxfam shop.

Steve (who just remembered that he did actually buy a copy of Amateur Photographer last night!).

are they still complete or are some pages missing?

The mags are pretty much a joke nowadays. I believe they are for total beginners and suck you in with banners that promise to have you churning out pro quality images as soon as you read the article.

Its the repetition that gets me, does the editor actually bother having a meeting every month to decide on future content? Its the same year in year out.

I've said this before and I'll say it again, people are always complaining about the mags so there must be a niche in there for something a bit more creative, experimental and inspirational. I would love a mag that isnt just and advert for the latest kit, something that inspires rather than bores me. I think that in this day and age where the possibilities for image manipulation and producing are pretty much limitless its sad that th emags can be so lacklustre.

Its time for the editors to start earning their crust.

They all end up running repetative articles, whether its a golf magazine a fishing monthly, or a photography one.

The only one I buy - and not on a regular basis - is Amateur Photographer and the reason for this is that it isn't too tech based (how many articles on Photo Shoppery can we stand?) and it's not overly expensive.

Also sometimes when I read my photography magazines, I have to double check the title to make sure I didnt pick up a photoshop tutorial magazine. :D

I've got digital photographer on subscription. A good mix of pro/decent amateur stuff plus good photoshop tutorials.

Occasionally they get re-read whilst I look back for something/ideas.

That's what I get em for too!

I find one mag can last me 3 months :)

Hmm, does that make me sound constipated?

OK, I'm the only guy that keeps the mags in business.
My boy got me a subscription for Digital Camera and I still buy the odd tog mag off the shelf if I see something that interests me.
... and I do enjoy them

I gave up buying imported (British & US) magazines when I was living in SA, because the weak rand pushed the cover prices into the stratosphere. I bought one copy of the only local photo magazine when it ran a "review" of the D200, and reckoned I could have learned more from Nikon's own marketing material.

I've been back in the UK for about 6 months now and none of the magazines really appeal to me. I can find out just about anything I want to know on the internet - loads of information - and it's free for all practical purposes.

I bought loads when I first got my DSLR, every months I'd buy almost all of them. Now I don't buy any, the appeal soon wears off and I learn five times as much in one day on here as I do every month reading all those mags.
