Magnification

A question from my wife which I'm unable to answer with any confidence: what is the magnification of an image taken with my Sigma 150-500 at the 500 end when compared with the Mk1 eyeball? It's on a Canon 600D.

Anyone?

I've always understood 50mm on full frame to be about standard view which equates to about 33mm on a crop. So going by that 500mm being equivelent to about 750 on full frame 15x but in my mind it's irrevelent

Magnification is pretty meaningless until you know how big you print it

afaik the x calculation is taken from the shortest to the longest focal length so e.g. if you had a lens that was 18-1800 then that would be a 100x, so a 150-500 is a 3.3x zoom.... a 24-105 is a 4x yet obviously the 150-500 reach is longer ....shows how useless the whole zoom x expression is. it means nothing without knowing the shortest focal length.(so you can x it by the stated figure to get the max focal length)

The "crop factor" doesn't magnify anything Andrew, just as looking through a toilet roll doesn't make things any bigger to the naked eye.

If you're displaying at 100% on-screen, you also need to know the size of the pixels. 2 sensors that are the same size but have different sizes of pixels will "zoom" to different sizes on a computer screen.
