Hi,

I'm struggling to understand in simple/basic terms for the differences between the Small Format camera, and the Medium Format camera?

I'm new to photography and just trying to grasp all the concepts for this...

Also, I have a D90, is this under the title of 'small format camera, digital 35mm'...

thankyou
Rachel

The format relates to the size of the CCD or FILM.

Full frame (35mm) is 36x24mm

APS-C or CROP Sensor (Your CCD) is 23.7 x 15.6 (approx) (canon use 22.7x15.1)

Other sizes are, for example, 645 which is a 4:3 ratio which is 56x41.5 and classed as MEDIUM FORMAT.

LARGE FORMAT get even bigger.

I was talking rubbish.

No change there.

But yes small format is 35mm film equiv and smaller, so any DSLR is small format in that sense.

Oh and compacts use whatever size the manufacturer feels like so

Canon Powershot A100 = 4.5x3.4 mm
Nikon Coolpix950 = 6.4x4.8 mm
Nikon Coolpix995 = 7.2x5.3 mm

etc..

Thankyou for the quick reply...

What would my D90 count as?

small format. I thought the D90 was FF but I bow to Cowasaki's better knowledge that it is cropped. So slightly smaller than a 35mm film frame.

But does it matter?

only the nikon D700 and D3 bodies are full frame I thought.

it's all down to grain size as to how large you can blow up an image
with digital it's down to grain size as above and how noisy those pixel points are at high ISO's when a greater current is flowing through them, I think....

it can be very confusing so look at the crop factor and think about that with respect to your lenses and their range. worth taking note

good luck on your quest for digging out these little bits of information
I've found these forums very helpful and generally friendly whatever the question :)
