Making a data disk with iMac

Grateful for advice - I know I am going to kick myself for doing something stupid - but I am missing something.

I have a one before the latest iMac - 3.06 - running the latest patch OSX (10.5.8) and trying to make a data disk. I have put in a DVD-R and can find no way of dropping anything to it.

First question. Do the drives in iMacs support DVD-R? A google search seems to suggest they should.

I can find nothing in Disk Utility that appears to format a DVD so that it can be readable and allow data to be dropped onto it.

Second question. Do I need to do this?

I have little need to generally backup to DVD, so not inclined to buy a piece of software to do the job.

If iMacs can only read +R I'll get some tomorrow - prefer not to if it is unlikely to be that. I have a load of -R's!

For some strange and deeply irritating reason, it just worked. I don't think I did anything different - I guess when folk say that macs just work, I just proved it in a way!

Sometimes :naughty:

Inserting a CD/DVD should open a dialogue box which gives you options, one of which is to open iDVD.

Alternatively from the desktop select the file or folder you want to copy and the from the "FILE" menu select "BURN XXXXX TO DISK.

If you right click on the desktop there is an option to create a Burn Folder.

Just drag what you want on the disk into that folder. It creates shortcut links so your files do not actually move.

Then at the top of the burn folder window there is a burn disk option.

Easy when you know how but i spent ages working it out...!

I have found the things that I was used to doing in Windows is the MS method, rather than the common sense method. t takes a minute sometimes to disengage MS brain. Now sorted anyway - this time.

Thanks for the replies.
