Making a living from Photography.

It depends on everyone's circumstances.

Those with no mortgage will be able to "get by" and have the same disposable income as someone with a mortgage by earning less.

Those who own and operate a studio will have higher overheads than those who can work from home.

Those used to earning 50-100K may not regard 25K as a living at all while those fresh out of uni or otherwise starting out in life might be quite happy with that.

Those living anywhere near London would have to earn absolute ****loads to be able to afford a roof at all while those living "oop North" will actually be able to afford to eat.

I could go on, and on and on but you get the gist :)

£122,643.32 :)

Or in other words what's the price of a nice Aston Martin these days :)

I need something to park next to the Bentley :)

Surely it's the same no matter what your earning the money from? whether its accountancy or photography?
Not necessarily. To leave the full-time job I am in now and make a decent living out of photography then I'd probably accept a 20% pay cut because I'd get much more job satisfaction and enjoyment out of it. I've been in my current job for 15 years and it's getting very stale. I'd take the hit financially to do a job I enjoyed.

I'm not going to tell you how much I earn now though.

I earn, currently, at the moment, per year, £0.00

Shocking isn't it.

I have no job and am living off the Government, Tax payers, Natwest and my parents.

I'll pay it back though. One day I'll work at Coca Cola. In 15 years time, I'll have had some input into the christmas Coca Cola advert you all know and love.

Daryl- your question doesn't make any sense as its "personal preference"- I don't understand what you are trying to find out. I think AliB's post says it all.

I was just wondering what people think is a good living not what their cicumstances are......
Without finding out what people's circumstances are then you may as well start a thread asking people to come up with a totally random number.

If you are a Managing Director of a big company earning £250k a year then you're not going to settle for earning £30k a year as a photographer.

If you are a 21 year old just coming out of college and get the chance to earn £30k as a photographer then you'll probably feel like you've hit the jackpot with your dream job.

The answers wouldnt make any sense unless accompanied by a lot of circumstances.. the difference between 18yo single guy living with mum and dad... to a middle aged married guy with 5 kids is massive.. two posters simply giving a figure would be meaningless..

just my opinion of course :)

Hi guys, I was just wondering what you thought you would need to be 'Earning a good living' from photography. Everybodies life style is different...

So what Would like to earn a year from it to be happy with?

15k? 25k? 40k? what would you consider a living?

Personally, I want to earn £10K per month AFTER all taxes. It's doable (IMO).

Gary.

I know everyone is different....... not interested if they have 16 kids scattered about the Country.

Its a simple question...... Everyones circumstances are different. Im not interested if you have 20 houses to pay for or no overheads....

I will say it again.

What would you like to earn to make a good living?

Some will want 20K some will want to turn over £250k As I would like.

not interested in peoples personnel stuff. That is private and for them to know.

P.S It did say every ones life style is different. so please dont list your woes and increasing gas bill moans.. Im interesed peoples ideas of the bottom line they would like to turn over.
So start again

What would you like to TURN OVER per Year?

My aim is to turn a Million doing schools by 2014.

Talking strictly turn over.

Ali? Stop waffling and side tracking everyone and say what you would like to turn over.

I was just wondering what people think is a good living not what their cicumstances are......

But Daryl, what I would like to turn over is completely irrelevant without knowing that background to that figure

I could say I'd like to turn over £100K but you might not know that the studio COSTS £50K and overheads are another £25 so I actually only MAKE £25K but then I'd be telling porkies because I don't have one!

I could also say because I am a woman of independant means, it does not really matter but again that would be a porkie because it ALWAYS matters :)

Turnover is the top line in your accounts not the bottom, (after everyone has pillaged it!)

So you're not interested in how many kids people have to support because that's personal but you would like people to reveal how much they'd like to earn?

You're not really seeing other people's point of view here are you?

I would be perfectly happy if I 'netted' £10,400 per year. However, I would only want to work 10am 'til 2pm (as I do now).

(I live in south Spain just about full-time and can have a fantastic life on that - even with the lousy £/€ rate at the moment ;))

TBH - as many others have stated already - It's all personal choice IMHO.

Why do you want to know - if you were working in an office, would to ask the person sitting next to you what their salary is ?

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, (pull hair out)

Nobody wants to read your personnal stats. What would you like your busi ness to turn over and what would you like to take home to be confortable?

There 2 questions. Gordon Bennet!!!

Ok i guess I'm wondering who really wants a carrer/Business in the Photography arena.
Or those who just plod along and are happy with beer money.

And Gary I know turn over is not profit.

4 people hare gave a straight answer everyone else just has to turn left at traffic lights like with other threads....

thats what Im after Bionic Dan.

I give up!!!!!!!

I dont want to know what people earn now.. ( as in real earnings)

Maybe I should have said What Is your dream ?

Shall I start it again? What is your aspirations?

What i thought was a simple question has turned into a fiasco....

Food boy and Naith ansewered ok with any probs...... I will go away and re think the question.

If your not interested in people personal "stuff" then why ask the question? Everyone's ideal income will be driven their personal "stuff".

Well it would help if you worded your question in a way that we could understand. I decline to answer your question however- as what does it matter what another earns? Surely it only matter what you earn & are comfortable with?

There's no need to get rude now Daryl :( - perhaps if you'd made yourself clearer in your opening post, then people would've been able to reply easier. Just my opinion though.

I understood your original question and replied accordingly :) £10K per month, after tax, or £120K per year, after tax, would make me very happy based on that money coming from photography.

The thread went off on a tangent, but you can't take the strop with people for pointing out that the answer is HUGELY subjective and relative to ones existing commitments, income & lifestyle.

Gary.

£2,500 - £3,000 minimum after expenses/tax etc and I would be prepared to leave work. I would never consider leaving for less or even the same amount of money to work for myself. At the moment I turn up for work, get paid regardless of input, and leave at the end of the day. Also I get PAID holidays, sick etc now, non of these happen when you are self employed ;)

If I worked for myself there is no such thing as 9-5 (saying that I think it changed to 8-8 a while back when I wasn't looking!)

For the added stress of working alone I would need the added pay.

yep I know that Gary... But I wondered what peoples asperations were.....

I dont want them broadcasting personnal stuff. Just what they would like, adream figure or a figure they would like to get to.

Poison food dude said what he would be happy with. Naith did...... Some one may have 14 kids 4 wives ans Budgie to support and could just say £120k would be nice.

But I dont want to know the the knitty gritty.

Other wise I'd be one of those sad people that watch Eastenders

I was just wondering what they would to have or get too......

Maybe it should have been a poll so no one could go off down a side road.....

How's the studio going? Looks great!

i would probably accept a 30% cut in what i earn now, though at the moment i don't have a mortgage to worry about and for half the year my livings costs are met by work. so its hard to work out really. but i think a wage of 25K would give a comfortable standard of living.

Its a hard question for me though because if all goes to plan then in 3-4 years i'll have to make the decision between a staff job with an agency or staying "part time"

I want to make enough that I don't have to do another job.

I gave up the 60+ hour a week one and took the hit from going into part time work so I could start up the photography one. It's not a quick fix and will take three years to even establish and five years to become anything like a sustainable business. I'm only one year in.

So where do I want to be in five years time would, I guess be the question.

Well, to be honest, I would be happy taking home an income of £40K

That's not easy in the wedding market today which is why I want a second string to that bow and I'm doing more interiors and building project work which I hope to build up in the next 12 months.

Architectural during midweek and weddings at weekend.

Damn! I forgot time off :)

Can I have beer too? ;)
