I have two layers open in PS, the bottom layer is an image and the second layer is a typed word, how can I make the typed layer transparent so that the image just shows through the typed letters.

Hope this makes sense! :D

I think I know what you mean, set the opacity on the type to around 50% ( have a play) and drag the ( font) layer on top of the image

I've typed my wording, dragged it to the layer with the image and reduced the opacity so the image is showing through the letters. What I can't work out is how to seperate the word (with the image showing through to put it on another layer.

This is the type of effect I am after: Link to image

I selected the text
inverted the selection
add a new layer hue/saturation
fiddle the sliders

think that's the effect you're after

oh and set the text layer to 0% opacity

Ah I see Sorry, that beyond me unless, magic wand select each letter cut and paste on to a seperate background each in turn

easier to select just the text if you hide the background layer

You use a clipping mask.
1. Dble click your image to change background layer to ordinary layer.
2. Make your type layer - I used Stencil Std @ 200pt.
3. Drag type layer below image layer.
4. Select image layer.
5. Go to Layer - Clipping mask make.

just another way......

1. Create a layer underneath your image with desired text on it.
2. Hold SHIFT and click on text layer in Layers Palette.
3. Select the layer with your image on by clicking it in palette.
4. Press CTRL+SHIFT+I (invert selection)
5. Press delete. Voila.
