Manchester (UK) - good locations for a band shoot for this weekend?

Hey,

A friend of mine in a (reasonably successful) band has asked me to come down to Manchester (I live in Carlisle) to shoot some promo shots of his band this Saturday (being somewhat of an amateur photographer with all the gear and no idea!)

The problem is, I've never lived in Manchester and I'm desperately scrambling around, trying to source some half-decent locations in time. (2 days isn't long to prepare for something like this!) Can anyone here help me out? Does anyone live in Manc and can suggest areas that might be more photogenic than their rehearsal space? In terms of a 'look' they're not into death metal or anything but at this late notice any suggestions would be most appreciated!

Many thanks,

Adam

what sort of backdrop and lighting are you after? There are some great industrial backdrops in manchester near the canal - but if you're after dark and dingy you might be better hiring a loft for the day?

What sort of look are you after?
There are lots of old mill type buildings red brick stuff, the print works, afflecks palace, the midland hotel, Haciaena apartments former iconic music location castlefields lots of modern buildings like Urbis, the Hilton (Beetham tower) Salford quays and the area round the Lowery and imperial war museum. Maybe a trip to Old Trafford or city of Manchester stadium? There are loads of railway arches and bridges scattered about as well. The cathereral gardens or even the trafford center

Other cool places out of Manchester that could be interesting china gardens in rivington or officially known as the terraced garden rivington, bit of a trek but lots of old stone archways and buildings, even up to the pike get some shots with Bolton or Lancashire in the back ground. Smithills in north Bolton the Smithills Hall Country Park for 14th century buildings and woodland.

Lots of locations that just scream Manchester

Nothern Quarter can be good, if you like run down alleys and graffitied brick walls. Equally Castlefield has a lot of potential for band shoots. I would say if the band you are shooting are local to Manchester ask them if they have any locations in mind. If they are friends then I guess they know you won't know the area and shouldn't mind you asking for ideas, location wise. If they sugesst a couple of places let us know what they are and I'm sure we can sugest places in the city that have a similar vibe :)

I have very recently (last weekend) done something similar for my son & his DJ mixing stuff. I used Saltford Quay.

castlefield is always a good location with the old warehouses and the canal. Salford quays is good for waterback drop with modern buildings such as the war museum and the lowry theatre.

some of the smaller back streest around the nortern quarter have some old signs, warehouses and old record shops etc that could be ideal also

look forwad to seeing some pics after the shoot

you want quiet areas i think and some with some nostalgia

the areas around deansgate station and oxford street station, the museum and university grounds i would suggest.
gets some trams in the shots and albert square
