I had a 190XDB, it was very good, the only thing I found was that being quite tall (6'3) I needed the centre column up a lot which of course decreases stability. A move to an 055XProB resolved that, in the last 6 months I've only used the centre column (vertically) once, and that was to clear a set of high railings.
I have the 190 XProB and am quite happy with it.
For me it is tall enough that I rarely extend the centre column much - I'm generally happy to take the shot from a slightly lower position than if I was standing.
I use the centre column switch to horizontal occasionally - but how much you would use it will depend on what you are shooting. It's certainly quick and easy to switch.
Tripods seem to be a balance of compromises between cost, weight and stability, for me, the 190 was the right combination when I bought it.

Yeah, if you need height go for the 055 series. I've got the 190XDB with 804RC2 pan+tilt head last year and have been happy with it, it's a very sturdy feeling tripod. However, I do wish I spent a bit more and got the pro version.
1. the leg locks are tightened with screws not flick levers. Works fine, just a bit fiddly.
2. the legs are 3 sections, not 4 so it's still pretty big when retracted. Hence I could never fit it inside a reasonably sized bag.
