I've been scanning through various websites looking for a tripod to buy, and I've decided on a Carbon Fibre Manfrotto, but am confused as to what is the difference between the 055CXPRO3 and the 190CXPRO3 (apart from the price).

Could someone enlighten me?

Thanks,

the 055 series is bigger than the 190 series.

I went for the 055 because it worked out about eye level without raising the column very far. on the 190 the column was at its limit.

It all depends what you shoot, as to if you need the height the 055 gives, and the 055 is a little heavier, although in carbon fibre the difference will be less noticeable.

Hope that Helps

I have just bought the 055XPROB non-carbon fibre over the 190 because of the fact that it can be taller and is apparently steadier, even though it is heavier.

Thanks for the info.

If you don't mind me asking how tall are you? I'm only 5' 5", so my eye level might fit the 190.

Cheers

If you`re 5'5" I think you`d easily get away with the 190.

I`m 6'1" and that`s the reason I went for the 055. I could use a 190, but it was at it`s full extension, and I had to bend ever so slightly.

Just found this:

* Maximum Height w/o Column Extended 48" (121.9 cm

Plus don`t forget that you add the height of a head on that too.

The 055CXPRO3 is a fair bit bulkier and heavier than the 190CXPRO3, albeit more stable. I went for the 190CXPRO3 as I wanted something light and relatively compact to strap to the outside of my usual hillwalking rucksac and lug up the peaks of Snowdonia. Weight was the deciding factor for me. I am 5'8" and don't find the height of the 190 a problem (I am sufficently evolved to be able to bend over on occasion and often use the tripod at reduced height anyway).

Stability of the 190 hasn't been a problem. It has coped well in high wind on the top of Snowdon (although I did hang my rucksac off it to weight it down!)

Bear in mind that if weight/portability is a deciding factor, the carbon 055 is in reality quite a bit heavier than the carbon 190 (although on paper the difference doesn't look much) and is, if I remember correctly, actually heavier than the aluminium 190. While it is lighter than the standard 055, it's not what I'd term a lightweight tripod. I spent a fair bit of time weighing up the options (excuse the pun) in a shop and would recommend you do the same if you can.

With tripods, heavy is good, and height is good. Two or three section legs are better than four. If you always have the centre column extended, then you are throwing away a huge amount of stability. Combine that with a long lens at anything less than high shutter speeds, and camera shake just from mirror slap is a real problem when IS is disabled.

Unfortunately, weight and height are not so good for carrying, but the large extra cost of carbon fibre compared to the small weight saving doesn't stack up for me at all. I'd much rather put any spare cash towards a good head.

i have the 190XPROB,and it's a great tripod IMO.i've only really used mine for landscape shots so far,so no big lens on it yet.i also considered the 055 when i purchased it,but the weight was a little offputting...didn't fancy carrying it and all my other stuff on a 10 mile hike

if your only 5'5",then i would think the 190 is right up your street

Thanks for all the feedback

it appears others have answered, but im a tad over 6ft, so at 5'5" you would probably be fine with the 190

I've had the 190CX PRO4 for about 5 months now and I can honestly say its one of the best I have used. I wanted something that was relatively portable i.e lightweight and fairly small and be able to carry my D300 with a heavy lens. I tried pretty much all manfrottos and gitzos that were around at the time and eventually came to a shop in Hong Kong and the guy showed me the brand new 190CX-PRO4. It had everything I wanted and more. It was easy to use, stable, relatively compact and lightweight. I love the fact you can turn the middle section horizontal easily and how well it goes with the 488RC2 ball head I got t the same time.

I was sold instantly and have never looked back. Awesome tripod!
