Would really appreciate some help on this.

I took the 393 out today for my first real attempt using it.

Now as i understand it the favoured method of use is to have it setup the opposite way to how it is shown in the product shots.

The problem i had was that once i had balanced the lens (which took lots of minor adjustments) I had to apply a lot of friction to the knobs :naughty: which control the tilting movement. Is this normal? my understanding was that once the kit was balanced it would stay in position and you would be able to change the position (eg tilt the kit up or down) without it over rotating.


It's likely that i am missing something and need to make another adjustment somewhere but i am stumped at the minute

ok yeah, i didnt want to hassle any one with a PM, so i will wait for a few responses as i know plenty of people on here use it.

On the plus side the kingfisher turned up twice in the short time i was at mere sands before it lashed down :D

Andy,I have one and it takes seconds to balance a lens,not sure why your having problems.....:shrug:

Fix plate on lens,slide into holder until balanced,tighten up,job done.I very rarely adjust the tensioners controls on mine,unless it is very windy.

Me too, holds the 600mm no probs. I think I may have adjusted the tension when I first got it though :thinking:
 
I have started using it in both positions recently,simply to save me repositioning my home made camo cover on the big Sigma,lazy git ain`t I.......:lol:..........and can honestly say that I have never had a problem.

The important thing is to ensure that the centre of gravity of the lens is below the axis, this way it is always stable and is easy to balance. For my 500mm that means I use the underslinging format as this drops the centreline of my lens below the axis. If your tripod mounting shoe is short then you may need to invert the top half and support the lens above the shoe.

When mine is balanced I do not need any friction from the axis joint to keep it stable.

Hi Ken, i've been looking at it today and using the 400 with both TC'S the tripod mounting foot seems to short for the inverted method, works fine underslung and stays balanced with no torque on the knobs.

I'm going to experiment some more tomorrow

TBH Andy,I have only used mine with a 600 F4 and the Sigma 300-800,both lenses have the three screw attachment,perhaps the one screw makes a difference,though you can still slide the plate up and down the foot.

Lets have a conflab at Leighton about it................:thumbs:
