hi folks....i've been thinking of getting the above for my wildlife shots as i'm not getting the results i think i should be getting using my A700 and 70-400 G SSM lens, especially when shooting hand held @400mm.i have a manfrotto XPROB190 tripod which is what will support the above camera and lens.

so my question is,is the 393 any good, and will it support the weight of the above(approx 3k)?

thanks in advance..

I have one and I like it.There are other brands on the market that others will recommend. Some are crazy money and some are not.The 393 takes a lot of beating in the value for money stakes. It will take 3 kg easily.

Hope that helps.

Edit....the mounting plate also has a secondary safety catch.

cheers fracster..very helpful indeed.

is there anything else i would need to purchase to mount it on the tripod,or does everything i need come with it,including what would be needed to mount the camera/lens to the 393?

Everything you need comes in the box with the 393.

I'd just like to say I agree 100% with fracster's views here.

I have one and use it with the 400 f/2.8 MKIII and TC's which comes in at approx 9KG and it handles it reasonably well. It isnt as smooth as Wimberley or Black Widow but then for one of those you won't see change from £500

yeah,i don't have that sort of money at the moment, plus i think the wife would castrate me for spending so much

Agree with the guys, the next option is a new ball head at under sixty quid,
It will hold a D3 with a nikkor 80-200 2.8
It has a new added friction plate so that when you release it ,the head does not dump you're lens and camera but slowly lowers them.

Report on it in AP
