The new year is upon us and before we know it psirng will have sprung, the sun will be back and it's time to start shooting outside again!

Over the next few weeks I plan on wandering around my local area to scout locations, and what I'd like is a way of marking them without resorting to OS, compass and markers. Soooo...does anybody know of an iPhone app that will track your location and drop a pin when you press a button and add a tag to it? Is there anything that came bundled on the iPhone (3GS) that can already do this?

I use ViewRanger, available for the iPhone. You can create poi's and take a pic at the spot. will also mark with map ref etc. I use it for walking/hiking, love it!

Sounds superb Baz, will take a look.

I use Memory Map, mainly because it can use the OS Explorer maps (1:25k) offline, which is useful because often when i'm out I won't get a data signal to be able to use something like Google Maps. You do have to buy the mapping tiles though, so that's probably only worth it if you'd use the maps too - if it's just for marking photo locations, you could get something free that just records waypoints that you can plot on a map later.

Even better for photography, I think, is a separate GPS track logger. Mine's called a "Bluetooth 747 A+ GPS Recorder" (catchy name), but basically it's a standalone matchbox-sized device that will just log everywhere you go. Big advantage over iPhone etc is the battery life - think it's something like 30-40hrs in-use, and when you're back at your computer it comes with software which can match the times in your photos to the GPS track to individually pinpoint the location of your photos and add the lat/long to your photos' metadata. There is then lots of software that can directly plot your photos on a map.
