Mark 2 or Mark 3 extender?

Looking at getting 1.4 Canon extender to go with the Canon 300 2.8 mark 1 is lens i have just got and wondered if there is much difference in image quality between the two extenders.

I tried both side by side on a 70-200 f/2.8L and apart from the 40% difference in price I couldn't tell them apart even pixel-peeping

Thanks i did wonder if there could be that much difference between the two.
Have you tried the 2x?
