Marumi DRF14C Ring Flash - Any good?

After my recent foray into macro with my new Canon 100mm L macro lens, I can see why a ring flash would be of great benefit.

The Canon ring flash is too expensive, the Sigma version at around £300, is still too much, after just buying the lens.

I have seen the Marumi, and at only £120, and is much more affordable. I realise it is far more basic than the other two, only having a single flash ring, not split, and also having no controls for the flash. Am I correct in thinking I can change the flash settings from my Canon 60D flash settings?

Has anyone got or used one? And if so, was the results satisfactory, considering its price.

I have the Delta 14 Ring Flash, which I believe is a re-badged Marumi.

I've not used it that much - mainly time constraints on my part since I've had it, but when I have it seems to work as I'd expect.

The unit is fairly simple, just on-off and test, and there is a definite knack to attaching it to the lens (which seems like a job requiring several hands the first time you try!).

I've not used any other ring flash units to compare, but for the price it's worth considering.

BTW: Just noticed there is a Marumi for Canon in the Classifieds here, you might want to look at that.

I have this ring flash and it's simple to use but you don't have much control over the power other than through your flash settings on your camera.

I've had it a couple of years now and find it great for that extra light I need for macro shots. I used to use my pop up flash when there wasn't enough light but that just gave harsh shadows.

For the price and if you like macro photography then I think it's a great alternative to the expensive canon version.
