Marumi macro ring flash

Has anyone purchased this ring flash from Marumi? If so, what have you found with it? I purchased it as a cheaper alternative to the Nikon R1C1 Close-Up Speedlight Commander Kit that I used in uni, but so far I'm not impressed - I've never used ring flash before, I'm trying to get some nice macro shots but its very flat and typical 'in built flash' at the minute. I can't work out if its the flash, my settings or the fact I'm not using the best lens - mine isnt a macro, its the sigma 70-300mm with a macro facility but you can't get that close to the subject so I'm wondering if thats the cause?

Anyone got any nice examples with this kit?
