Mate with a D3200 wants an all rounder lens

As per title, something to shoot the grand kids, something for close ups, portraits, landscapes and something good on the telephoto end for when the grand kids are swimming with the dolphins in orlando this summer, he specifically only wants 1 lens so no multiple suggestions please

i thought about the NIKON 18-200mm VR but if theres something more suitable then let me know
 
I used to have the 18-200 VRII, it was a good all round lens. I had read reviews regarding the front element coming loose and soft focus issues but I never experienced these.
 
Is he after buying or borrowing Gary?

VR1 and VR2 so VR system is better. There is also a zoom lock on the VR2 which could be handy as these lenses are prone to creep. Only locks it at 18mm though. Optically, pretty much the same. Personally I'd just go for the VR1 and save some cash. Unless buying new in which case there is no decision to make.

Buying, he currently has the kit 18-35 and Tamron 70-300 but wants an all in one jobby, spoke to him today and says he doesnt want to lose anything off 10mm or 300mm so its now looking like the Nikon 18-300mm, £570 from Panamoz.

They are both VR2.

Both are VR2, mk1 has the red VR2 label while mk2 only has the gold VR label. Only difference is the zoom creep lock at 18mm. but as I've demonstrated in this video when I'm selling the mk1 version, it's not really a problem.

There is minimal change from 200mm to 300mm, Things get bigger by 1.5x, this can easily achieved by cropping the photo, considering D3200's 24MP sensor. Considering the weight of 18-300mm, I think a 18-200mm is a much better bet.
