I really need some help working out the maximum magnification of 2 lenses. I have the 2 numbers for the lenses but i dont know how these compare to each other and how they relate. Can anyone help?

The lenses are the Canon 50mm 1.8 which has a magnification of 1:6.7 and the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM which is 1:4.1

Can anyone explain how i read these numbers and how they compare?

Thanks :)

At the same camera-object distance, the magnification is purely a function of the focal length.

The factors shown here indicate the magnification at the minimum focussing distance and maximum focal length (usually, or whatever combination gives the maximum magnification). The two lenses will have different minimum focussing distances.

1:6.7 means an object at the maximum magnification will appear 1/6.7 of its size on the sensor/film plane.

Thus, the sigma can show things to be about 50% bigger than the canon at its minimum focussing distance.

That answers it perfectly matey Thankyou! :D
