Being the entry level camera, is the 400d less suitable for largeish prints compared to other bodies higher up the range?

By large i am thinking 15x10" but possibly bigger. Will i start losing detail at these sizes or do i have the wrong end of the stick?

It will not struggle for a print like that, 15x10 isn't really that big!

I'm sure you get good quality up to A3 size with a 400d!

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm mistaken :D

I see your point. The photos will be displayed in a conference room on the walls around a table. The closest you would be to a photo at any time would be about 2 feet. Though in reality you would be looking accross the table at the opposit wall, not behind you so more like 9 feet.

Assuming the shot is fairly sharp it will look great, 15x10" is roughly 260 DPI @ 10mp.

i got a few pictures printed A1 size onto board and the detail was spot on...

300DPI for high quality stuff I guess, but surely for billboard you can get away with 150DPI perhaps. it all depends upon what you require.
the 400D does 3888 x 2592, so that's about 25" x 17" at 150dpi

For a real billboard I'd have thought you could get away with about 10 DPI.

And if you want a really really really big image, you can make do with far less than 10 DPI. For example, fire up Google Earth and go to 37°38'46"N, 115°45'3"W. That image is probably more like 0.1 DPI. You could reproduce that with a 400D, easily.

Put it this way. I have a 6mp Nikon D40 and have printed 30x20" with excellent quality even close up.

You can always use software interpolation. Speak to whoever is doing the printing and find out what resolution you need to suppy to them.

I've had an A1 print made which looked stunning - you can print massive pictures.

EDIT - Its not an entry level camera - the 1000D is Canon's entry DSLR. Pretty much the same camera but with less AF points.

Hmm, I've had A1 prints done that were shot on a Canon 300D (2 models down!) and they looked awesome. It'll go bigger than you think...

without interpolating you can get a 21.6 x 14.4 inch print at 180dpi, with interpolating you could get 43.2 x 28.8 inch if the picture is sharp enough.

remember the larger the print the further away you look at it.

you can print any image really no matter the size.

just depends on the viewing distance you want to see the image from.
with my old 400D I printed A2 & A1 just fine.

its all about post processing that gets you the best results with print ;)

You can also create larger images from multiple shots in order to print even larger. So in effect you can print as large as you want with any camera, you just neeed enough shots.

reads very reassuring. sadly though apart from resolution you get other things with high end cameras that 400d is lacking. I suppose if you do portraits, 5dII will give you better tonality and other things I cant yet name :)

Hmmmm, such as??

10.2mp is more than enough resolution to print an A1 print!!

well I am not an expert to answer this. there must be though, why else people buy 5D. i myself am not very happy with results from my 400d. could be postprocesing problem or just a sign that i need to move up to MF :)

It's more likely your lenses than the camera.

What lenses are you using?

Of course the 5D has its advantages, but in terms of printing big prints, the lower end cameras are still just as capable.

I too would suggest its your lenses that are preventing you getting the most out of your 400D - I can get stunning pics out of mine when i do it right (and look at some of the pics others have posted on here) but then I've invested in better lenses as this is where image quality improvements come in. What lenses have you got?

Well, I use contax 28mm f2.8 and sigma 30mm f1.4, occasionaly canon 10-22, but most of the time 85mm f1.2. I guess the pictures would be deemed good enough by most people, it is just that I expect more of them. don`t take my comments too seriously though, I believe one can get nice enough prints out of 400d, especially if they get them from a pro lab (I haven`t done it)
