Yes
Yesterday McAfee released Dat update 5958 which recognises svchost.exe as a malware file and deletes it.

This causes the PC to be unable to start services and you get stuck in a crash reboot loop, or you can log in and have no start bar and then it reboots with a DCOM launch error and the 60 secs to reboot countdown.

Dat 5959 was rushed out to fix the problem, which seems to only affect Windows XP SP3 machines.

It's a simple fix, so if you have this - don't panic. It's actually easiest to remove the system drive and replace the files externally.

McAfee's page about the issue here: http://vil.nai.com/vil/5958_false.htm

I had this on my home pc last night and we've had a few work pc's affected

WOW that was clever for such a big company! Aren't they brilliant!! LOL

I steer well clear of McAfee and Norton anyway!

Supposed to only affect corporate version.

Luckily someone here saw the online article before our EPO console started to push out the latest dat so we managed to avoid it :)

mind you theres been quite a few iffy updates recently..

yesterday clamav on our internet appliance started blocking yahoo and apple websites for an iframe virus, today avast has decided that one of the IBM client access programs was a worm.

Yeah we use Deepfreeze on public library machines and McAfee released a DAT update which essentially stopped the service running so rendered the machine useless. Has taken 3 days and boat loads of scripts to fix it!!

Yeah I saw this, lucky for us we dumped the enterprise version in our corporate infrastructure about two months ago :)

How bad would my day have been sorting this out! Praise the lord for Sophos Endpoint Protection :)

Yeah Neil, works fine for us, no issues, used to have slow logon problems because of McAfee's inability to support exceptions for scanning, finished last week setting up exceptions for our DC, SQL, SCCM and Exchange boxes.

Never been happier with a corp AV solution.
