Apologies as I don't know the term for this as am v new to photography.

Anyway, what I did was take a picture of myself with tripod in 3 different positions and then used the layer tool in Photoshop to make one photo with me, me, me.

Problem is, how can I focus on myself in the different places when 1) i'm not there to focus on (lining up the shot) and 2) I can't move the camera from the tripod as will distort everything around.

Hope this makes sense! Any ideas?

Use a large aperature to give you a big dof and focus on something approximately the right distance away before positioning your self for each shot.
 
You need to shoot in manual, set a high Aperture, say f11. Turn autofocus off, and focus midway between the closest and furthest places you will be standing. Take a meter reading at f11 set the values in the camera on manual and then use self-timer.
