Medium-ish shoulder-style camera bag?

I'm looking for a new camera bag. I currently have a LowePro Nova 160 but it's just not big enough. I ordered a Tenba Messenger mini case that arrived today but it's about three times as big as the LowePro!! I just need a bag that will carry one body (Canon EOS 550D) and two or three lenses, plus spare battery, battery charger, spare SD cards, field book, and maybe a mini tripod. The new Tenba would do all that but seems really huge and the pockets are very tight. I think I'll probably end up returning it, but I'm still looking for the "perfect" (that's a joke!) bag. I also have an old LowePro Series 3 and Tamrac System 6 but they're both too big, too. I don't want a backpack (have one of those too!) as they're a nightmare to use when you're out (have to get it off your back, then open it, then put it back, then zip it up, then put it back on your back...). I will probably send the Tenba back, but the husband is running out of patience with my bag fetish.

Has anyone got any suggestions for a smallish to midsize camera bag, please?

Edited to say my old BIG bags are actually a Tamrac Pro 8 and a Lowepro Nova 5. I dug them out of the loft, too!

Agree with the Think Tank Retrospective. I have the 20 but have a look at the different sizes. Depending on which lenses you have you might find the 10 would be big enough. There are plenty of Youtube reviews of them to check out.
 
Crumpler gigolo....doesn't scream camera bag and has style ;)
I've got a 7d with 15-85 attached..sigma 10-20..70-200 with extender...filters ..battery..cleaning cloth and still room to squeeze a bit more in.
 
Thanks for the replies. I had a look at the Think Tank Retrospective but they're a little more expensive than I want. Then I looked at the Crumpler Gigolo, which were less expensive but couldn't find a model number that seemed to do what I wanted and they were expensive, too. I'm hoping to stay under £100. I dug out an old Canon bag from the loft this afternoon. It's not great and will be changed soon, but in the meantime, my gear fits. I think I'll look at some other models of LowePro and Tamrac as they are more in my price range. Someone suggested the Amazon's own brand of bags are well-made. I also like the zip closures as they reduce the sand and dirt factor, and the Tenba I ordered certainly didn't have that. I didn't notice it when I ordered it, so it's another reason to send it back.
 
Have a look at the Manfrotto range, they make some very nice messenger bags, also worth a look are National Geographic.

Had both and no complaints, well made and very functional without being too flashy

One other option might be get one of the camera bag inserts (ebay or amazon) and use it with a regular messenger bag

I know you said you don't want a backpack, but I have to suggest the lowepro slingshot 202.

I have it and it's fantastic for day to day stuff, I have my d5100 with 18-200 on it, 35mm, 17-50, and sigma 70-200 (but that is filled :p) in their at all times, an flash, charger in the top, a few cards inside and filters in the front.

Single strap though, so not for everyone, but for me I love it, slides round the front, unzip and pull the cam out. Also doubles as a rest to steady the cam.

For around 45 ish new, I think it's a fantastic bag.
