Can anyone explain to me in layman's language why when my camera is 12MP most of the pics I take come out at about 4MP ?

I'm hoping it's an easy answer or have I got it set wrong ?

    Thanks.

Do you mean (1) they come out at 4 megapixels or (2) the file size is 4 megabytes? If (1) you have the picture size set too small. Look for a menu item for setting the "image size". if (2) that would probably be correct for a 12 Megapixel image saved as JPEG.

Thanks Andrew. Yes the file size is around 4 megabytes, I think I have been confusing MP with MB

Andrew is right, Megapixels is not directly related to the file size (Megabytes).

Cameras with the same megapixel count can produce wildly different files sizes depending on the quality selected, file format and even the subject.
