Hi,

I currently have a 14MP camera but am going on holiday soon so will be bringing that with me. I want to print them on my printer on 6x4 paper as well as putting them on Facebook. Any way I was just wondering, is there any point of leaving the image size on 14MP? Does it make the quality better when printing to 6x4 paper as that's really small photo paper?

Sorry it's a basic question.

Thanks
John.

It's generally accepted that 300 dpi is the optimum for printing. A 6x4 print is 1800 x 1200 which is much smaller than the image size for 14MP.

If your not cropping the images then it would be easier to batch process them down to 6x4

in case you don't have a calculator - 6x4 at 1800x1200 is just 2MP
As said though, gives loads of room for cropping...

I'd leave it at the larger setting, just in case you get something that you want to print larger in the future

I find this is a really good guide to print sizes for top quality prints and I've referred to it often for a specific size print. Hope this is of some use to anyone.

Hi John. Just wondering why you want to print all of them anyway. Its better to view them on your computer, on your TV or put them up to something like flickr to share them. Saves the cost of printing and the bother of storing them. I'd be inclined to take the full mp images.

I'd leave it set to max + fine detail (so at 14mp) resolution even if you are printing the full shot on a 6x4, but leaving it on 14mp resolution allows you to crop in quite significantly and still have the detail there...

Have a good holiday

I feel the exact opposite of this. I really do think everyone should print more, myself included. It's so much better sitting round with family and looking through old photos and passing them around than huddling round a computer or television and watching a slideshow.

As for the original question, I would indeed shoot full size, just incase someone asked for one of your 6x4s at say, 18x12. Storage is cheap enough.

I sort of think its each to his own. I've been down the route of tons of albums mouldering away taking up room in a cupboard. I'm now at the point of 4 storage boxes of mounted prints. I haven't space for more!

Thanks for all your replies.

Basically I just want to print off the photos because I like to keep them in albums to look back without the need of having to turn on the computer, search for the photographs etc. I just prefer keeping important memories as print outs.

Just going on a family reunion holiday -> and my mother can't use a computer so I think it's easier to just have them printed out so she can look through them whenever she wants.

Thanks :).
