No
And no it had nothing at all to do with wedding threads on here. I have a laptop with all the sweary words removed for that. :)

I have quite literally melted the processor on my desktop PC. It's not even that old! Under 2 years and it's completely fubared.

So just ordered another one and it took me ages to go through all the various specs to make sure I won't melt this one. 2.66Mhz quad core processor (whatever that means!) 6Mb RAM (I get that bit) 1Tb hard drive and I'll fit the 500Gb one out of my melted PC as a drive for the OS and software and keep all the data on the 1Tb one. That way I can back up really easily to my 1Tb external drive.

I suppose that's what rainy day money is for. Grrrrr.:bang:

Ouch, sorry to hear that Al, glad you've been able to get it sorted though:D

... 2.66Mhz quad core processor (whatever that means!)

I would have plumped for something a bit faster than that, does it come with DOS too?

(You mean GHz :))

You shouldn't need to order another machine, you could just replace the processor and fan. The fan probably stopped which caused the processor to overheat, however I thought all modern processors had a throttling process when they get to hot to stop just this?

You might need a bit more than 6mb of ram ;)

And i would upgrade the ram from 6MB to 6GB possibly as well.

sorry to hear you melted the processor, at least you get a good specced machine that should last you a bit longer than two years now

How did you manage to melt the processor?

Insufficient cooling I expect, particularly important in this weather and especially if overclocking.

The fan was running OK, I checked that. It's been breaking down for a few weeks now and we thought it was the HD originally when it started replicating directories all over the place and losing data. Then it would refuse to boot, that happened three times. Now it just refuses to do anything. I did enquire about changing the processor but it's really not worth it. Once you fry one it can cause all sorts of problems.

Thankfully I have a friend who is a PC engineer specialising in large HD installs so he had kindly volunteered to swap the hard drives for me next time they come for dinner. Feeding your friends is always good. ;)

Glad you are all having a laugh at my PC blunders. I'm not very good with specs these days (as you can tell) but strangely could probably still do a few things with DOS.

Now where did I leave that 5 1/2 inch floppy...........:D

Oddly enough 5 1.2 inch floppy discs make fair IR filters so if you have one... :)

hehehe, shouldn't that be 5 1/4 inch floppy.

So basically, you've bought a Core i7 920 machine. Very nice, should fly through image editing!

Also, @Chaz - You don't need a 64-bit OS for a quad core processor, you do however need it if you wish to access any more than about 3.5GB of your 6GB of RAM.

If it's a new machine though it'll come with Vista 64.

So far today I've had what you could call a "non" day.

Had to order a new PC this morning because my photoediting one went thingies uppermost. "Not a problem" I thought, I can get on with scanning some MF negs of a wedding that I've been asked to do............

You guessed it, I can't get the blooming software for the scanner to run on my (also new) laptop!

Eight hours into my working day and I've achieved absolutely nothing. And when my new one is delivered it will take another day to reload all the software...........and then another to do the hard drive work to intall hte slave.

And they call computers progress?

Where did I put the ruddy sledgehammer! ......................

You lack ambition :p - Software install depends on how much, Internet Browser, PS, LR, Office etc. will be 3 hours at most and adding a second hard drive is a 20 minute job.

No, I live in the real world!

It's not just PS it's all the actions and presets and plug ins and restoring all my archive of photos I need. Last time that took 6 hours!

Does anyone know which application I actually need in among all the dross on the install disc for a Canon 8800F scanner to scan MF negs?

I'd rather herd cats............

I wouldn't mind if it was down to neglect but one heatsink and two fans really ought to do the job and there was hardly any dust in there. I'm quite careful about the environment in my office especially if I'm going to be scanning negs it's not that manky, honest! :)

Ha! got the scanning software working at last. 5 o'clock, thunder is brewing, washing is on the line and I'm just getting started.

Who said this photgraphy lark was easy again? lol

AliB I know someone with access to MSDN and a legit copy of Windows 7 64bit ;)

If you want I can drop "him" a line and see if "he" can supply you free of charge :D

For testing only remember ;)

Gary.

ooh has the full release hit msdn..

Full release candidate. Will require replacing I think sometime late 2010 at which point any windows install will more than likely be fubared and need saving :D...

Win 7 is ace.

Gary.

Has to be better than Vista................all mine have been slogging away on XP for yonks. It works, don't mess about with it. I HATE Vista. It asks you three times if you really, really want it to do what you have just told it to do. OF COURSE I BLOOMING DO!

Give you a call tomorrow Gary :) Thanks

Windows 7 is much better. It still asks you lots, but you can safely switch the nagging off.

Speak to you tomorrow!! :)

Gary.

nothing wrong with vista, just turn off the UAC.

Ha :D Everything is wrong with Vista, but that's as much as I am gonna bite. Let's just say - I have more than enough experience with all flavours of Windows to know when an OS stinks. And Vista stinks like no others.

Anyway, I'm out :D

Gary.

I truly despised Win2000. At that time I was working with imaging systems on microscopes and we had a heck of a job because Win2000 would not let you use external drivers which was what we needed to run the CCD cameras.

(see I've just blown my cover, I'm actually not THAT bad with PC's but glad you all had a laugh ;))

Happily scanning away now :)

Despite its poor start, Vista with SP2 is actually very good. I run a strange mix of machines ranging from a couple of Linux laptops (ubuntu), XP (my primary machine), a laptop running Vista SP2 and a machine running Windows 7 RC. The golden rule of any Microsoft OS is wait until at least the first service pack before upgrading. However, I know a few people who are running Windows 7 RC as their primary machine and are very satisfied with it. I must admit to being tempted to stick it on my primary machine. For a change Microsoft do not seem to be rushing something out of the door and then patching it with service packs but are actually going to release a pretty stable and very usable product first time around. I tested the pre-release beta of Windows 7 and the release candidate is a huge leap up from the beta.

Fair point. Vista got better, for sure. It limped out the door though, and deserved all the crap that was thrown at it. My belief has always been that it was installed on so many under powered PC's that were well within *official limits*, that it had no chance. SP1 made it better, and I was *pretty* happy with the 64 bit Vista. I soon replaced it with Server 2008, and now, Windows 7 which is like a breath of fresh air - its fantastic.

Gary.

I built a new PC just after x***, and have Vista 64bit running on it, and it is fine.

Ok, the PC has a fault on it where it has starting problems, but once running, everything works for me, can't see any reason for me to change from Vista for a long time.
