Hi all
Could any of you advise me on a good memory card reader or shall I just download pictures straight from the camera.

I use the Lexar Professional dual card reader Lexar Dual card reader which is handy as it does both types of card - hence the title of it :lol:

I think a few would recommend this as well... Found for about £18

personally I would just download them from the camera as I dont see any benefit on removing the card first and then downloading the photos?
 
Cool I was about to ask a similar question of what is a good CF card reader! What about FireWire readers? Are they much faster?
 
I've started using a Integral CF card reader from www.7dayshop.com £4-95
quicker and less hassle with the leads (where you can catch it and have your expensive camera pulled to the floor) :$
 
Untill recenty I didn't realised how good card readers where, I used to plug my camera into my laptop and transfer my pics that way... just realised my laptop has a built in card reader.. maybe urs has too??
 
Card readers are much faster than direct from camera. I use a sandisk imagemate.

Firewire should be quicker, and I expect USB 3 will start to be more common place soon too.
 
I got a couple from 7dayshop. Not these: http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_6&products_id=108547 but similar. Dirt cheap and surprisingly fast for what they cost.
They're small and compact enough to always have one in your camera bag or laptop bag. I bought two and keep one in both bags - you never know when someone's gonna give you a XD card and want to show you some photos!
I get around 15MB/s transfer off my old ones, so good enough for me. To get faster, I reckon you'll need a firewire or USB3 reader :)
 
+1 on the Lexar. A lot faster than the cheap ones that I've tried. Depending on your card speed obviously.
 
If you're using a PC, get one that fits into a spare bay on the PC, that way it's always there and there are no trailing leads.

Or just about any USB2 reader. 15MB/s is fairly slow. I get over 20MB/s from my cheap Tesco CF reader and around 30 MB/s from my Lexar.

Of course, for real speed I use the Lexar Expresscard reader - 64 MB/s (and it's that slow because the card is the limiting factor).
