Yes
I currently have the D300 I use 4 gig cards but when I am shooting motor sport in raw files the buffer runs out fairly fast. Is there any way of connecting a small hard drive to take the pictures direct. Like connecting a lap top or I pod / pda

I'm not too sure about Nikon but I'm pretty sure you should be able to shoot tethered with the D300. I can do it with my 400D. The only thing that stops me is not having a USB cable long enough.

Usually the manufacturer's software allows you to shoot like this but there should be someone out there that knows for sure if you can do it and how.

Hope it works out,
Tom N.

You can get them but they are expensive, The problem is power for the hard drive/usb.

The one I saw was like a mini Epson portable storage unit wilth a battery pack slapped on the side. It was £800 and heavy so I think you would be better buying a couple of 16GB cards!

Not sure an external hard drive would help with the buffer running out fast anyway.
That is relates directly to the write speed, what acrds are you using?

If you shoot 12bit raw rather than 14 bit it will help

Continuous mode 12-bit RAW
Lossless Compressed
0.16 second (6.11 frames/sec);

Continuous mode 14-bit RAW
Lossless compressed
0.38 second (2.66 frames/sec);

i will try your settings cherrs

Well if you are using the optimum cards and shooting 12 bit raw then there is not a great lot else you can do apart from adjust your shooting style so you are only taking the shots that count.

done that as well just take 3-4 burst at a time
it is when 3 or 4 cars/bikes come past with only second betwen each one it soon mount up

what is the buffer rate and the burst rate?

I don't think tethered will help, we have used D3's like that and it's fairly slow transfering, slower than writing to the card anyway.
