Hi

Sorry for yet another question - I seem to have so many at the moment :(

I just wondered what memory card people would recommend for 450d or 550d? I want to go for maximum capacity as I don't have easy access to a laptop to download photos as often as I'd like so I was thinking a 16gb SD card.

Is it worth investing in something like the Sandisk extreme III?

:)

Personally would recommend more smaller cards than one bigger and a holder purely as if your card fails on you there is less chance of losing all the shots on the card. You can get a cheap SD or CF card holder for £8 which will fit in your pocket...

nope SD. I use Sandisk cards, they are a few generations behind I think but it won't really matter as - at least in RAW mode - the camera will be the bottlekneck in terms of burst speed.

I'm not sure about the write speed of either 450D or 550D, so the general recommendation would be to get one that's as fast as you need.

Having said that; I'm happily using the Kingston Elite Pro 133x CF cards for my 5D2 and have found then more than adequate for both photo and video. Which is great since they're cheap too! :)

In terms of size I prefer to carry a bunch of 8gb ones with me.

Argh - I'm confused!
I just tried to buy an 8 gb Extreme III SD card but there seem to be different types. There's one that is 20mb/s and there's another that is 30mb/s and then there's another which just says Extreme (not extreme III) but is also 30mb/s.

Which one is the best one?
I'm very confused! :)

i wouldn't buy the 30mb/s (transfer rate) as they're really for high end camera's that have a very large buffer capacity, i use x2 Sandisk Extreme II 2gb storage.

I cover mainly motocross events and can get through up to 20gb a day sometimes but the max i use is 4gb cards - Good for 500 odd shots in the my 50d's - Id always run smaller cards if i were you - If i was to loose a 16gb card id be well out of pocket with the images id lost.

Just a thought?

Andy

Yeah I know I should get lots of smaller ones. I go places where I can't easily get access to a laptop to download so I have lots anyway and in the past I've always had lots of 2 or 4gb ones but I'd like to go for something a bit bigger. Having lost cards in the past I know how awful it is. I'm planning on taking RAW + large jpeg images though think maybe the 8gb (a few of them) would be best for me.

I guess I'll go for an extreme III with 20mb/s then as they're significantly cheaper than the 30mb/s.... it's very confusing with different names and speeds. I've just found another which is an extreme (not an extreme III) and just called class 10, no mention of speed:help:

I recently bought one of these,

for £10, nice easy way to keep track of your cards and easy to fit in a pocket so you know which ones have been used...

Although it contactains Scandisks not those on display lol.

Nice...I just find that writing numbers on the back of the cards in permi-pen and a trouser- or jacket-pocket works equally well...lol

Not wanting to sound like i doubt you bit are you sure 500 odd shots is correct for a 4gb card and a 15.1 MP sensor?
Only reason I ask is I only get 390 shots on a 4gb card with 10.1 MP.

Are you shooting constant RAW or is that number a mix of RAW and JPEG?
