Hi

I'm getting a Cannon 550D and like Skoda’s you buy the car and find out you haven’t got a fuel tank!! (I.e. Memory card)

p.s only joking nothing wrong with Skoda’s there good cars now so Skoda drivers please don't give me a hard time :nuts: :nuts:

So been looking at cards

Can you let me know what the difference is between SD and SDHC???

And what do these class things mean i.e. class6, class 10 ect.

And if I’m shooting RAW how many shots should I expect to get on a 16gbcard??

Hi

SD are the older type, SDHC are the High Capacity versions, 4Gb and above. Beware, SD readers wont read SDHC, but SHCD will ready both.

The Class refers to the write speed. Go for the fastest you can afford.

Class 0 cards do not specify performance, which includes all legacy cards prior to class specifications.
Class 2, 2 MB/s, slowest for SDHC cards.
Class 4, 4 MB/s.
Class 6, 6 MB/s.
Class 10, 10 MB/s.

I have a 4Gb SDHC Class 10, and its great for sports (fast photography), but it depends on the fps and buffer of your camera.

On my 4Gb, I shoot RAW + Large jpg, and can get 200 images.

10 MBps (ie class 10) will be fine if you only intend to take single shots and also with the fps of the 550D, but you'll be a bit stymied if you want to take HD video.

Look for something that records at 15MBps or above. An 8Gb Sandisk Ultra II for example will cost £12.49 at 7dayshop which will give you 1000+ large fine jpegs or 400 or so RAWs.
 
10 mps is very two years ago!

Sandisk have just launched the Extreme Pro which has a write speed of 45 MBps!

The camera needs to be something called UHS-I compatible to achieve that apparently. I might invest in one as I am about to order a D7000 (which is compatible) which has been criticised for it's poor buffer capacity so this sounds like it's just the job.

I really don't understand the attitude of paying out £800 or so on a camera and then baulking at spending roughly 4% of that mount on the media that records the photographs that it takes.

Thanks ill think I will get the ultra ii as I will never get above 400 before it gets on the comp

A lot of Fords have the spare underslung beneath the boot.

Back on topic, all of my cards are Sandisk extreme iii. Never had a problem with any of them.

And I don't understand the whole "I'm buying Sandisk because it has Sandisk written on it" either ;)

Yeah - but you (and some others of us ;)) still remember shooting Film and the on-going expense of that, so memory cards are small potatoes in comparison.
